CAREY'S CONVERSATIONS

"Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord." James 5.14

Today in our Church calendar we remember St. James the apostle who was one of Christ's first followers and was martyred for his faith. He also is the assumed author of the New Testament book bearing his name. This was one of my father's favorite books because of its practical wisdom.

The above passage provides the scriptural reference for the Church's practice of anointing the sick with oil. The Catechism of the Episcopal Church refers to this practice as "Unction" and lists it as one of the "sacramental rites" of the Church and commends it to anyone who is suffering: "Unction is the rite of anointing the sick with oil, or the laying on of hands, by which God's grace is given for the healing of spirit, mind, and body" (BCP p. 861).

Here at St. Luke's this sacramental rite is available in two ways. The first way one may receive unction is by coming to the Wednesday Eucharist held in the chapel at noon. Healing prayers are said and holy oil is applied. The second way to receive is by calling the church and requesting a pastoral visit from your clergy. Deacon Joanna or myself would be happy to schedule a time to visit or feel free to call and make an appointment to drop by the office.

"O God of heavenly powers, by the might of your command you drive away from our bodies all sickness and infirmity: Be present in your goodness with your servant Name, that their weakness may be banished and their strength restored; and that, their health being renewed, they may bless your holy Name, through Jesus Christ our Lord."Amen.

The Book of Common Prayer p. 458

Yours in Christ,

Carey+

FROM THE SENIOR WARDEN

The sign up list for Feast with Friends will be in the Narthex beginning this Sunday. This is a great way to get to know new members on a personal level.   The monthly potluck gives you a chance to share a meal (and possibly a little wine) with your fellow church members and prospective members. You can sign up to host (host provides main course) or just attend and bring a dish. We will be beginning in September. It is a fun event and a great opportunity to get acquainted.

Don't forget the organ recital with Lynn Bauman on Sunday at 5pm. It should be a great evening.

We had 41 people Sunday night for the Travelers game, a great turnout. Everyone had a great time. The food was great and the weather man even cooperated. Don't miss it next year! Thanks to Joanna for coming up with the suggestion.

A big thanks to all of you who have contributed to our Adopt A Project program. Because of your generosity we have been able to get some things done without impacting our budget. Our next major effort will be painting the outside of the Parish Hall. We will probably be doing that in September so we will need some volunteers to grab a paint brush and join in. More later.

We will be starting the planning soon for our budget for 2013 which will include a stewardship campaign. This will be in two phases, one for the MAP program and the other for the regular budget. Please prayerfully consider your own personal giving. We have some great things going on at St. Luke's and we need to be sure we keep it up.

There are lots of things going on in our church but unless you step out and get involved you miss out on a big part of it. There is a lot more to St. Luke's than just Sunday morning although under Father Carey's leadership we have an outstanding worship service. We have some really neat and nice people but unless you get involved you may not get to know them. There are lots of organizations, social events, etc. to participate in. I encourage you to see what is available.

Again, if you have questions that I can help with please call me.

Thanks for listening.

Jerry Hodge

A THANK YOU FROM BROUKE REYNOLDS

I would like to thank the people who helped in the kitchen the first night of VBS:  Suzzette Patterson, the Dunwoody's, and the Reynolds family.  We could not have pulled off a successful dinner without your help.  I would also like to thank Dan Dennis, Gary Dunwoody, Dawn Reynolds, Suzzette Patterson, Paula Benson, and Pat Martinka for making such wonderfully yummy treats for the kids and the adult workers to enjoy.  I am appreciative and Linda White from Park Hill Christian wanted me to extend her appreciation as well.  Thank you and God Bless you!

DAUGHTERS OF THE KING

This sentence appears in the DOK Prayer of the Order, "Pour out upon us the sevenfold gift of the Holy Spirit that we may always remember it is your work we are called upon to do, that all we think, do or say may be pleasing in your sight." St. Emma's Daughters want to use the gifts given to them to help you and serve our Lord. Do not wait to ask for help. Simply submit any prayer request on a DOK card found in the church pew rack; call the office for visitation needs (hospital or homebound); tell any Daughter of special needs; or let our President, Mary Ann Hodge, know and she can direct us in helping you. We keep your needs confidential, as desired.

"God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another... Do it with all strength and energy God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ." ~ 1 Peter 4:10, 11
