The road that is built in hope is more pleasant to the traveler than the road built in despair,

even though they both lead to the same destination.

"Come, thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free."

-Charles Wesley

The word Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, which literally means, "coming." This special season that begins our Church Year is one of hopeful expectation and preparation. This emphasis is quite different from the penitential season of Lent. In Advent we prepare for Christ's second coming by remembering his first coming. We ponder the ancient prophecies of a Messiah who would become incarnate. We listen to the story of Mary and wait with her during these four weeks before Christ's Nativity. Stories of darkness are interrupted by the coming of the Light of the World. Advent is also a time to become more watchful or alert to the stirrings of the Divine Presence in our daily lives. Through the ordinary events of our lives Christ shows up and makes them extraordinary.

Many centuries before the reformation there was an old English liturgical rite known as "The Sarum Rite" or "Sarum Use." It originated sometime in the late 11th century in Salisbury, Wiltshire (Sarum was the Latin word for Salisbury) and continued until the reformation. Sometime later they were reintroduced in the Church of England and can now be found in many churches within the Anglican Communion throughout the world.

Theologically, blue is the proper color for this season, because blue is the liturgical color of the Blessed Virgin, and very fittingly symbolizes hope, expectation, confidence, and anticipation. These are all adjectives that describe the season of Advent.

We have been blessed by a special memorial gift that has made possible the purchase of "Sarum blue" altar hangings and vestments. When you come to church this Sunday you will see these blue altar hangings and vestments rather than purple ones. During the service they will be dedicated to the memory of Mildred Ford, the first female Sr. Warden of St. Luke's and mother of Mary Jane Hodges.

I hope you will make plans to join us this Sunday and on the "Wednesdays during Advent" that will begin with Evening Prayer at 5.30 p.m. in Gontermann chapel followed by dinner at 6 and teaching. On the first two Wednesdays I will be giving talks on my trip to the English Lake District and the Lake Poets and Joanna will give a couple of talks on Celtic Spirituality.

Come join us during this season of Hope!

SUNDAYS IN ADVENT

From the Organ Bench

This Sunday we start our Advent season.  It is the beginning of our church calendar year.

Those of us in liturgical churches take 4 weeks to prepare ourselves for the celebration of the Incarnation.  It is a time that I like to contemplate what I personally have accomplished this past year, and what I would like to do different in the coming year.

I will be the first person to tell you that I have never made New Year's resolutions.  Even if I tried to, they NEVER lasted more than a few weeks.  So I have figured, why bother?

I do like to take the season of Advent and do more meditation and inward personal reflection.

I hope that you avail yourselves of some of the numerous oppurtunities that are available this Advent season at St. Luke's.

Get ready, because Christmas is coming and there will be a great celebration this year.

DOK PRAYER CARDS FOUND IN PEW RACKS

Since 1885 Daughters around the world have offered daily prayers on behalf of those in need.  Here at St. Luke's NLR, St. Emma Chapter continues that tradition.  Please write your prayer requests for self or others on the prayer cards found in the pew racks.  Place them in the white box on the shelf inside the church entrance.  "For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words."  Romans 8:26

ADVENT EVENT/ECW NEWS

The Advent Event will be December 4.  There will be a potluck luncheon after church.  Dawn will have a sign-up poster in the Narthex.  We are asking that people bring dishes from the ECW cookbook for this event.  There will also be a table for CPC-used book sales, ECW cookbooks will be for sale, and the fruitcakes will be ready for delivery.  Be sure to sign up for the potluck, and come to see all that is going to be happening on that day!

ATRIUM 3 NEWS

Since the catechists will not be here on the first day of Advent, we spent Nov 20th in Advent Preparation and Celebration as we began work in preparing a special communal prayer for the advent season.  This work is for the children to prepare a thematic communal prayer, selecting all of the scripture readings, prayers, and songs that in some way reflect the season of Advent and the coming of the Messiah.  We do this work because an Advent-themed communal prayer service allows children to synthesize their understanding of Advent, their readings of the infancy narratives, and the prayers and songs that are familiar to them.

We also explored a Reading from Matthew's Infancy Narrative.  This presentation seeks to read, reflect, and further wonder on Matthew's infancy narrative, found in Matthew 2:1-12, which tells of magi from the east coming to worship the Messiah.  This infancy narrative reveals how the three gifts from the Magi indicate Jesus' kingship, divinity, and humanity; it also heralds how the Magi, representatives of all people, receive the gift of Immanuel that is offered to everyone.

Finally, we attempted to pick out colors for our new atrium.  Although we are not fully decided, we believe a light brown for our classroom and a light blue for our prayer closet will be what we will end up with.
