ECO-St. Lo
| Here is your green tip of the week from ECO-St. Lo, your award-winning local environment group. Think about buying fair trade items if you feel compelled to purchase Christmas gifts. Fair trade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), fair trade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. The fair trade system includes environmental standards as part of producer certification. The standard requires producers to work to protect the natural environment and make environmental protection a part of farm management. Producers are also encouraged to minimize the use of energy, especially energy from non-renewable sources. Fair trade criteria require sustainable farming techniques. Moreover, fair trade premiums are often used to train producers in organic and sustainable techniques like composting and integrating recycled materials, which can help them make progress in organic conversion in the future. ECO-St. Lo is selling fair trade items (tuques, scarves, coffee and jewelery) from Peru Tuesday and Thursday this week and Tuesday of next week at the reception area. All proceeds go to ECO-St. Lo's environmental and fair trade initiatives.

Students who wanted to take the December 3 SAT test, but who did not register on time, can register as "stand-by". You will be charged late fees and you cannot register online. Read the information online about "stand-by" testing. To get a registration form, see Nicole Anne Daigle in room 254 (library).
