ECO-St. Lo
Logo Eco St Lo

Here is your green tip of the week from ECO-St. Lo, your award-winning local environment group.

Join the worldwide meatless Monday movement!

Going meatless once a week may reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. It can also help reduce your carbon footprint and save precious resources like fresh water and fossil fuel. The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization estimates the meat industry generates nearly one-fifth of the man-made greenhouse gas emissions that are accelerating climate change worldwide . . far more than transportation. And annual worldwide demand for meat continues to grow. Reining in meat consumption once a week can help slow this trend.

So skip meat once a week-or more!

At St. Lawrence,it's easy being green!

The deadline to apply for fall admissions in Québec is March 1, 2012.

A workshop for students applying to university this year will be offered during lunch hour, Tuesday, November 29 from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Room number to be confirmed. Please note that the date has changed (not November 28 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. as first announced).
Deadlines for universities outside of Québec may vary (February to June). If the program is competitive, university admissions office strongly advise students to apply earlier.

If you did not apply by the November 1 deadline for the winter semester, call the university directly to see if you can still apply. The deadline is important for limited admissions program. If there is room in the program after November 1, you may still apply.

BE AN ANGEL. Help make someone's Christmas special by contributing to the 16th Annual Community Christmas Hamper Campaign.
Xmas Hamper (2)

Again this year, the hamper may be found right in front of the reception desk.

Every Year the Hamper Committee has the challenge of filling over 200 Christmas hampers to be distributed to English-speaking households in the Quebec City region.

Our SLC community can play its part by bringing in some non-perishables to fill up the basket, or making a donation, or both!

St. Lawrence is the place where all the  contributions are put together to make boxes for the people who need them.  Volunteers will begin welcoming contributions from other institutions at 13:00 on Dec 14.  If you would like to be one of those volunteers, you could contact Jan at Jan.Anderson-Toupin@ssss.gouv.qc.ca!  Strong arms are particularly appreciated!!!

If you would like to make a cash donation, you may give Christine Dick a cheque made out to The Christmas Hamper Campaign, and it will be turned into such perishables as eggs, flour, beef, and turkeys.  And of course, tax receipts are issued for donations over $10.See Joanne McCalla for more info.

Do you want to win great prizes AND contribute to a good cause at the same time?

Christmas HamperThen you must check out the Christmas Hamper Fundraiser!

Generous local contributors have donated arts and crafts projects to help raise funds for the people in need in the community.

Come and see the showcase in front of the reception desk, or else check the online gallery of projects on the St. Lawrence webpage.

Buy your tickets at the Reception Desk, from Student Activities or else from Patrick Savard (ext. 472).

SAT TEST TAKERS

Students registered for the December 3 SAT test must remember to read the registration guide and come prepared for the test. You must bring a valid ID with picture that matches the name on your admission ticket. Be sure to read what you are allowed to bring (type of pencils, authorized calculator, etc.) and leave behind what you are not allowed to bring to your desk.

Students who wanted to take the December 3 SAT test, but who did not register on time, can register as "stand-by". You will be charged late fees and you cannot register online. Read the information online about "stand-by" testing. To get a registration form, see Nicole Anne Daigle in room 254 (library).
http://sat.collegeboard.org

Students who want to register for the January 28, 2012 test date must register at the latest December 30, 2011. We strongly encourage you to apply by December 20 (early registration deadline) if you are sure of taking the test.

Who should register for SAT testing?

Students planning to go study in the States are generally required to complete SAT testing. The test is administered by the College Board. Canadian students are considered to be international students. Students planning to take both the SAT and SAT Subject tests must do so on two separate testing days.

Although St. Lawrence is an authorized testing center, you must register online at  http://sat.collegeboard.org and pay your testing fees to the College Board. Study materials are available at your library. You may also use free online practice tools or order additional practice material. The registration booklets, as well as the preparation booklets, are available in the Counselling Office, room 254.

Our test center code is 97261 (if you don't find our name on the list, you may also search by code). If you have any questions about the registration process, you may contact Nicole Anne Daigle, Guidance Counsellor.
