ECO-St. Lo
Logo Eco St Lo

Here is your green tip of the week from ECO-St. Lo, your award-winning local environment group.

North Americans consume nearly 100 million tons of paper per year. For every ton of office or copier paper, two to three tons of trees were cut down somewhere. North American households receive well over 100 billion pieces of junk mail annually , consuming over 100 million trees. And around 40% of "garbage" in municipal dumps across the continent is made up of paper.

At St. Lawrence we're trying to do our part by reducing, reusing and recycling the paper that we consume. We already recycle well over 2.5 tons of paper per year. And we're trying to do just as well for plastic and glass.

We invite all members of our community to use the specially marked bins to recycle paper, plastic and glass.

At St. Lawrence,it's easy being green!

University Admissions
The deadline to apply for fall admissions in Québec is March 1, 2012.

A workshop for students applying to university this year will be offered during lunch hour, Tuesday, November 28 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. (duration shorter if fewer participants). Room number will be confirmed in next week's newsletter.

Deadlines for universities outside of Québec may vary (February to June). If the program is competitive, university admissions office strongly advise students to apply earlier.

If you did not apply by the November 1 deadline for the winter semester, call the university directly to see if you can still apply. The deadline is important for limited admissions program. If there is room in the program after November 1, you may still apply. Applying later will mean that you will receive a response later and register for courses later than the majority of the students.

To understand the admissions process and to view a list of programs open in the winter, click here (information in French).

CHRISTMAS HAMPER CAMPAIGN
Xmas Hamper (2)

Again this year, the hamper may be found right in front of the reception desk.

The Hamper Committee has again collected the names of Quebec City families who need some help this Christmas.  And we can play our part by bringing in some non-perishables to fill up the basket, or making a donation, or both!

If you would like to make a cash donation, you may give Christine Dick a cheque made out to The Christmas Hamper Campaign, and it will be turned into such perishables as eggs, flour, beef, and turkeys.  And of course, tax receipts are issued for donations over $10.See Joanne McCalla for more info.
Do you want to win great prizes AND contribute to a good cause at the same time?

Christmas HamperThen you must check out the Christmas Hamper Fundraiser!

Generous local contributors have donated arts and crafts projects to help raise funds for the people in need in the community.

Come and see the showcase in front of the reception desk, or else check the online gallery of projects on the St. Lawrence webpage.

Buy your tickets at the Reception Desk, from Student Activities or else from Patrick Savard (ext. 472).

DO YOU NEED TO TAKE THE SAT?
SAT

Students planning to go study in the States are generally required to complete SAT testing. The test is administered by the College Board. Canadian students are considered to be international students, and therefore, must register at the latest November 8, 2011 for the December 3 test date. We strongly encourage you to apply by the October 25 (early registration deadline) if you are sure of taking the test. Students planning to take both the SAT and SAT Subject tests must do so on two separate testing days.

St. Lawrence is an authorized testing center. Students wishing to take the SAT can register for the December 3 or January 28 test dates. Although St. Lawrence is an authorized testing center, you must register online at  http://sat.collegeboard.org and pay your testing fees to the College Board. Study materials are available at your library. You may also use free online practice tools or order additional practice material. The registration booklets, as well as the preparation booklets, are available in the Counselling Office, room 254.

Our test center code is 97261 (if you don't find our name on the list, you may also search by code). If you have any questions about the registration process, you may contact Nicole Anne Daigle, Guidance Counsellor.
