An exhibition of "ancient pots"

Ancient Pots

One of the ways to learn about long-gone civilizations is to put ourselves in the shoes of the people who lived back then, and to experience their technology. This is what the students of History of Ancient civilization did! You can admire their creations in the front entrance and near the reception desk.  As they made pottery the "old way", they realized that there was a lot of know-how involved in the production of this important tool.

Pottery was important in ancient societies, where containers made of pottery were used to cook and conserve of food and water while clay was also used for brick-making, for sculpture, as weights for spinning and weaving, and even as a support for ancient scripts.

French test for Anglophones attending l'Université Laval

If you completed all of your schooling in English (primary, secondary and collegial studies), you may ask for the TFI (Test de français international). All students who graduate from an English CEGEP and plan on attending a French university must pass a French test to evaluate their level of French and determine the number of French courses (if required) they will have to complete (usually 1 or 2) in order to obtain their bachelor degree from l'Université Laval. If the French test is not linked to admissions (only certain programs), you may not have to take the test before entering university; however, taking it sooner will give you a better idea of your French level and will allow you to register for a French course right at the beginning of the semester.

If you have already applied, you can ask your Direction de programme to register you to the June 3 test administration date.  Expect to pay around $50 to take the test. L'École de langues at l'Université Laval offers the TFI to their students.

Although this test is offered in June and August at l'Université Laval, we would like to determine whether or not it would help students to be able to take the test here on Monday, May 23, 2011. To keep the price as low as the university, we need minimum 3 students who are absolutely sure they will be taking the test. If you are interested, please write to me before April 29 on MIO and tell me in what program you will be studying this fall at l'Université Laval.

Green tip of the week from your ECO-ST. Lo, your local

environ-

ment group.

Friday April 22 was Earth Day  all across the planet, a day to celebrate the source of all life, our threatened earth. There are many simple ways that we can lessen our impact on the earth. Check them out on the Earth Day Canada website at

http://www.earthday.ca/pub/resources/top10.php

Here at St. Lawrence we are not just celebrating Earth Day or even Earth Week: we've been celebrating Two Weeks for the Earth. This week we have two major events lined up. On Tuesday April 26, watch out at noon hour in the cafeteria: there will all sorts of contests and actvities, with fabulous prizes, as well as a visit from an endangered species. On Thursday April 28, we will host a conference at 12:15 in room 268, featuring a speaker from the David Suzuki Foundation. She will talk about the St. Lawrence River and what we can do to save it.

Being an eco-responsible citizen also means voting with the environment in mind. Here are some report cards for our political parties, prepared by such reputable environment groups as Equiterre and the Sierra Club.
