Green tip of the week from your ECO-ST. Lo, your local environ- ment group.
Green tip of the week, from ECO-St. Lo, your local environment group Remote controls, toys, flashlights, smoke detectors-these are just some of the products that require batteries in our daily lives. Over three billion dry cell batteries are sold each year in North America alone. Because batteries disposed of in municipal landfills and trash incinerators can disperse significant amounts of heavy metals and other toxic substances into the air and water, battery waste prevention and recycling strategies are essential. Most types of batteries can be recycled. However, some batteries are recycled more readily than others, such as lead-acid automotive batteries (nearly 90% are recycled) and button cells (because of the value and toxicity of their chemicals). Other types, such as alkaline and rechargeable, can also be recycled. Silver oxide batteries can be recycled to recover the mercury. Stay tuned next week for the story of cell phones! In the meantime, please recycle your batteries and cell phones here at school. St. Lawrence is proud to announce that we now have a cell phone and battery recycling service. Please deposit all your used batteries and cell phones in the blue bin located in front of room 340 at the south (pyramid ) exit. This is an ECO-St. Lo initiative in partnership with our local administration. At St. Lawrence it's easy being green!
