Green tip of the week from your ECO-ST. Lo, your local environment group.
Did you know that livestock adds more greenhouse gases to our environment than motorized transportation? That's right: about 18% of total emissions. This is caused by deforestation for pastures, the production of fertilizers for feed crops, transporting the livestock to slaughterhouses and energy consumption to run meatpacking plants, in addition to the creatures' massive consumption of calories. And imagine this: cows burp and fart many hundreds of tons of methane-a far worse greenhouse gas than carbon- each and every day. Combine this with all the nitrous oxide released by their excrement and we have a recipe for disaster.
Keep in mind that one pound of meat requires eight times as much energy to produce as one pound of veggie protein, such as tofu.
So the single most effective thing we can do to reduce our carbon footprint is to reduce or eliminate meat from our diet!
At St. Lawrence it's easy being green!
