CHRISTMAS HAMPER CAMPAIGN
Xmas Hamper (2)
Again this year, the hamper may be found right in front of the reception desk.

The Hamper Committee has again collected the names of Quebec City families who need some help this Christmas.  And we can play our part by bringing in some non-perishables to fill up the basket, or making a donation, or both!

If you would like to make a cash donation, you may give Christine Dick a cheque made out to The Christmas Hamper Campaign, and it will be turned into such perishables as eggs, flour, beef, and turkeys.  And of course, tax receipts are issued for donations over $10.

Green tip of the week from your ECO-ST. Lo, your local environment group.

Think green when travelling this Christmas. That's the eco-friendly way to go!

Many of us fly places during the Christmas break. Whether to visit loved ones or to get away from the cold, we use airplanes at a rate that is punishing for the environment.Check out the following sites for more on the harmful effects of air travel:

http://www.sightline.org/research/energy/res_pubs/rel_air_travel_aug04

http://rabble.ca/news/2010/08/air-destroying-planet

http://www.alternet.org/environment/43095

The obvious answer is to cut down on our air travel. But if we really have to fly, we might check out carbon offsets. Some argue that this controversial approach enables us to offset the damage our flying does to the environment. Check out this website to learn more about offsets and for suggestions on how to choose a reliable offset organization:

http://www.davidsuzuki.org/issues/climate-change/science/climate-change-basics/carbon-offsets/

Here's an interesting link that challenges the whole notion of offsets:

http://www.counterpunch.org/checker08272008.html

The botton line is that we need to be more aware of how our travel choices impact the environment.

At St. Lawrence it's easy being green!

ECO-St.Lo, your local environment group, wishes you a very merry green Christmas!
