SLC GRADUATE SHAWN BELANGER
| 20 years old, has been diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive soft tissue cancer. The proximity of the tumor to the brain, rules out surgery at this time, and he is being treated with Chemotherapy. Shawn is treated in New York, due to the reputation of Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Unfortunately, the situation is quite serious. Shawn is facing a 30-35% three-year survival rate, of which more than 50% will relapse. There will be many expenses which are not fully covered by insurance (medications, travels, rent, etc.), ultimately expected to total a six-figure sum. While the family must deal with the personal tragedy of Shawn's illness, as friends and colleagues we can also see the devastating financial consequences to the family and want to do all we can to help them in this time of need. We are asking everyone to open their hearts and their checkbooks, and make a donation to the family. A collection box may be found at the reception desk. We sincerely thank you for your generous contribution. |
| CHRISTMAS HAMPER CAMPAIGN |
Again this year, the hamper may be found right in front of the reception desk. The Hamper Committee has again collected the names of Quebec City families who need some help this Christmas. And we can play our part by bringing in some non-perishables to fill up the basket, or making a donation, or both! If you would like to make a cash donation, you may give Christine Dick a cheque made out to The Christmas Hamper Campaign, and it will be turned into such perishables as eggs, flour, beef, and turkeys. And of course, tax receipts are issued for donations over $10.

Green tip of the week from your ECO-ST. Lo, your local environment group.
Composting is an excellent way for us as individuals to cut down on ourpersonal contribution to landfills. And did you know that decomposing waste in landfills generates methane, a very powerful greenhouse gas?
There a number of ways we can compost. Quebec City has some municipal programs and we can compost at home.
If it is difficult for you to compost due to lack of space, here's another idea: collect compostable materials at home and take them , say once a week, to any one of Université Laval's many buildings where there are bins to receive compostable materials, including vegetable cuttings, pasta remains, bread, eggshells, seafood shells, fish, milk products (including cheese) even meat waste and used paper towels! Yes, Université Laval's project is remarkably extensive and we at little St. Lawrence should take advantage of their facilities, at least until we establish our own.
Here are some links that can help us get started in our composting:
