This Wednesday is CARFREE DAY worldwide It's being celebrated in Quebec City too! Check out the wesite:www.jembarque.org Every September 22, people from around the world get together in streets, intersections, and neighbourhoods to remind the world that we don't have to accept our car-dominated society. But we do not want just one day of celebration and then a return to "normal" life. When people get out of their cars, they should stay out of their cars. It is up to us, it is up to our cities, and our governments to help create permanent change to benefit pedestrians, cyclists, and other people who do not drive cars. Let World Carfree Day be a showcase for just how our cities might look like, feel like, and sound like without cars...365 days a year. As the climate heats up, World Carfree Day is the perfect time to take the heat off the planet, and put it on city planners and politicians to give priority to cycling, walking and public transport, instead of to the automobile. So take the time to join in on the celebrations! You can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 2.84 tonnes a year by using public transport. If you drive 25 kilometres to work every day, this trip will produce up to 2.84 tonnes of greenhouse gases annually, as well as urban air pollutants. You can play a part in helping the environment by using public transport and leaving the car at home! The more people using public transport means there are fewer cars on the road. Each kilometre you save by not driving your car to work means less fuel burnt, reducing urban air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. LEAVE YOUR CAR AT HOME & SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT! Distance you live from the City Weekly distance travelled Greenhouse Gas Emissions per week Distance travelled per year based on standard working year Greenhouse Gas Emissions over one year 25km 250km 61.5kgs 11,550km 2.84 tonnes 20km 200km 49.2kgs 9,240km 2.27 tonnes 15km 150km 39.9kgs 6,930km 1.70 tonnes 10km 100km 24.6kgs 4,620km 1.14 tonnes 5km 50km 12.3kgs 2,310km 0.57 tonnes Why not leave your car at home on Wednesday? And if you already commute by other means, why not encourage your friends and family to do the same? Or at the very least carpool! At St. Lawrence, it's easy being green!
