Greetings!

Two big things this month, Shoes for Haiti and time to get ready for the holidays.  I'm already seeing holiday ads, the stores are filled with decorations and gift ideas, and my grandsons have started making their lists.  I love this time of year, and we are having a stunningly beautiful fall, but before we know it the holidays will be here.

Make decorating fun and stress free by following a few simple ideas.  Jump start your holiday decorating (and subsequent organizing) by planning to decorate the weekend after Thanksgiving.  Check out my ideas in the next article.  I think you'll like it and you will save so much time and effort in subsequent years.

In this period of Thanksgiving, now is a good time to get rid of all your gently worn shoes.  My friend and fellow organizer, Scott Roewer, is heading up the Washington, DC area's collection and he will be personally delivering them to Haiti in January.  Read all about it and join in, won't you?

Decorate With Ease

This is your year to get a handle on all those holiday decorations so we're going to start early - the weekend after Thanksgiving!  Only for this year though because after you pack up in January, you'll be organized for 2011.

How many boxes of holiday decorations do you have and where are they?  I'm guessing some are in the basement or garage, others are in the attic and the occasional "found after the holiday" decoration is stuck in the junk drawer.
Take the phone off the hook, eat a good breakfast and get started by taking out every single decoration.

Step 1

Inspect all your decorations and if they are broken, toss; wrinkled or misshapen, let go; missing a piece - bye, bye.  Loved the three foot nutcracker last year but now not so much?  Donate him.  Have an angel treetop but you'd rather have a star?  She goes in the donation box too.

Step 2

Plug in every strand of lights - indoor and outdoor.  If they don't light up, time for recycle or trash.  If they are multi-colored and you like all white, donate them.  Plug in every other lighted decoration - electric candles, outdoor santas, and lighted wreaths.  If the bulb can be replaced and you have one, do it now.  If you still really love the item and want to use it again but don't have a bulb, put it on your shopping list (which as you know, goes on your calendar because if you don't schedule it, it doesn't get done!)

Step 3

Next comes decorating - the tree, mantle, door, staircase, outdoors -- everything -- then see what's left.  If you didn't use all the lights this year, you won't use them next year so donate them.  The same is true for any decorations.  Hanging on because the kids made them and you would feel guilty if you let them go?  If something isn't special enough to display and you still want to keep it, put it in a keepsake box and tuck it away in the attic.  Better yet, take a photo or do a little video clip speaking your memory of the item.  You then have a lasting memento and you don't have to hang on to unused items.

Step 4
Buy a sparkly new decoration if you see something you would love to have!  The trade-off is that something has to go.  Who doesn't love to see all the new decorations at the mall?  Have fun with this process, be kind to yourself and in donating your holiday items before December 1, you will be kind to a family who can use your decorations.

Soles4Souls

My friend, Scott Roewer, is a professional organizer who is also a community activist.  Those of us who do Community Service work know that besides helping others we are helping ourselves.  It simply feels good to help others!

You have a chance to pitch in by clearing out all your gently worn shoes and donating them to this worthwhile project.  You can drop them off at my house, 320 E Del Ray Avenue, Alexandria, VA or give me a call and I'll swing by and collect them.  You can also go to their website for a list of collection points that might be more convenient for you.

If we've recently worked on your closet and you don't have any shoes except those you actually wear (yes, I'm so proud of my clients!), you can make a cash donation here.  Either way, you are making a difference in someone's life.

This time of year always opens my heart to all I am grateful for - you, my very special clients and friends, my loving husband and family and my perfect (no, really) grandsons.  The holidays can be hectic so take time to be gentle with youself.  You'll get a lot more done and will feel better doing it!

Happy Organizing,

Judy
