Pissarro's Modern Ideas

Pissarro would be an environmentalist if he were alive today. His love of nature is seen in his keen observations and detailed images of the rural scenes and common people, and he believed that living in harmony with nature would make a better world.
Through art he communicated his philosophy and ideas. A founding member of the French Impressionists, Pissarro wasn't even French. He was born on St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands in 1830, but lived most of his life in France. He loved to paint the French countryside, and his rural scenes balance the rich green tapestry of the farms with the figures of peasants working the land. Like environmentalists today, Pissarro sought a better balance between nature and humanity.
A leader of the Impressionists, Pissarro painted with short, broken brush strokes instead of the smooth, invisible layers of earlier styles. In the 1870s, in Paris, Pissarro and the Impressionists defied the styles of the French Academy. Read more

Engage Your Local Press

Create more awareness about your school's art program! Invite your local newspaper to visit during an Art in Action lesson. Danette Pugliese and Laura Dantes contacted their local paper in Half Moon Bay, CA prior to their school's Art in Action fundraiser, and the journalist wrote a very informative story about the program at Farallone View Elementary School.

· had a great-grandson, Joachim Pissarro, who was Head Curator of Drawing and Painting at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Save the Date March 5, 2012 Atelier d'Artistes
|  Art in Action's fourth annual Atelier d'Artistes will feature a spring luncheon, student art demonstrations, and silent auction on Monday, March 5, 2012 at the Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club in Menlo Park, CA. Flo Oy Wong, nationally acclaimed visual storyteller and installation mixed media artist, will share her stories and artistic experiences.
