Transform summer with an exciting art project that will engage
the whole family. Start with inspiration. Visit an art exhibit such as Impressionism
at the de Young Museum or Shanghai at the Asian
Art Museum. Then pick a favorite artist or style to learn about. For each
artist, make a scrapbook or PowerPoint collection. Learn about their life,
their art, and their world through books, websites, and visiting other museums
that have "real" art by your special artists. Draw and paint in the artist's
style; for example, try plein air (outdoor) painting, or Chinese brush painting.
Learn a few art words from their language, and find clothing styles in the
artist's time. Enjoy a celebration event to present the projects, such as
cooking a French dinner or eating at a Chinese restaurant. Judy SleethHelpful suggestions for visiting an art museum

Art Advocacy
| Building a Well-Rounded Child Through Arts Advocacy Tom Hatfield believes it's time for a radically different approach to
art advocacy. The discipline, he reports, is strong enough to stand on
its own, and in fact, always has been. Cut it from public school
budgets and you're sending young adults into the world unprepared for
21st-century communication. Read more

Summer Backyard Art by Betsy Halaby
| Summer is the perfect season to create art outdoors just like the plein air Impressionists. Who cares if paint spills on the grass? Set up an easel or cover a table, provide paint, brushes, sponges, Q-tips and construction paper. Focus on a favorite part of the garden and sketch basic shapes of trees and flowers. Mix paint colors to match flowers and paint scene using short brushstrokes. Dab white paint using a small sponge to flowers and grass to simulate a sunny day. Cut out butterfly shapes and use Q-tip to apply dots of color for a Pointillist effect. Glue butterflies to painting when dry. Take a picture of your artwork and email it to us and we will feature it in a future newsletter!

What is A Child's World? Is it a world full of fantasy and magic? Is it
a world of fairies and superheroes, monsters and mud pies? Children
have the gift of temporarily abandoning harsh realties and replacing
them with games, songs, and laughter, a gift we, as adults, are often
envious of. June 19 - September 26, 2010 Triton Museum
