Letter from the Executive Director
Art Transforms Schoolsonebrickhelp
Art in the hallways is a sure sign that your school is special. It gives evidence of engaged students in an exciting learning environment. Art celebrates both the students' creative talents and the school's stimulating environment. Visit the annual art show at an Art in Action school and you will see a vibrant art community where
parents have transformed a room into a museum of self-portraits, collage figures, abstract paintings, and clay sculptures. Learning through art transforms the way children think. They observe more closely, imagine other possibilities, and recognize divergent solutions.
The Art in Action Program inspires all learning styles. Lessons develop creativity, problem solving skills, and critical thinking skills essential for success in the classroom and the workplace. As art transforms your school, notice how adults and children discover new possibilities and begin to think in new ways.

Teacher of the Month
onebrickhelpJennifer Nelson, art teacher at Village Elementary in Coronado CA, is transforming her school through Art in Action. With a grant from the Coronado Schools Foundation, Jennifer began teaching first and third graders in January. By March, hallways were filled with artwork, including a ten foot Pollock mural. Parents were so impressed by their child's knowledge of art history and their growth in art skills that by April, the PATT (parent/teacher group) was eager to bring Art in Action to the entire school. Jennifer keeps busy teaching Art in Action EVERY DAY!

Welcome New Schools
onebrickhelpLack of funding for arts education did not deter our two newest schools from bringing Art in Action to their students. Thanks to funds from a SMART grant through the Redwood City Education Foundation and the passion of teacher Susan Stanchfield, Kindergarten students at Fair Oaks Elementary School are learning about art around the world.  FIRST  5 LA and California State Preschool Program (CSPP) funds will allow young students at El Rancho Unified in Pico Rivera, CA. to engage in Art in Action this fall.
Art Makes Science Come Alive
colorwheelThe lesson on Johannes Vermeer (Program Level 3) is a perfect way to introduce color study. Learn how color is affected by light while mastering the art of mixing tints and shades of a hue with tempera paint. Check out the  100  websites to help you integrate art into your core curriculum.
Art Advocacy -
Creative Ways to Fund the Arts
onebrickhelpThe Arts: Alive and Well in Petaluma, CA
Art and music programs are extremely important in providing a well-rounded education to students. Yet in times such as these, when schools are forced to make deep cuts just to preserve the basics, it's usually the art and music programs that are the first to go. Yet that's not necessarily the case in Petaluma, where several schools have developed innovative methods to continue providing art and music instruction. Continue

Arts Group Protects Escondido School Programs - Escondido community leaders are launching an arts education advocacy group today to protect school arts programs from budget cuts. The Escondido Alliance for Arts Education will consist of parents, teachers, business leaders, arts organizations and elected officials. Continue

The Arts Flourish in Salinas High Schools - We applaud Superintendent Jim Earheart's decision to fund arts and music programs at Salinas Union High School, and acknowledge the vital support provided by the Salinas Union High School District Foundation." Learn more
