| Letter from the Executive Director

We
are entering the Conceptual Age. Skills important in the Conceptual Age are
finding creative solutions, conceptualizing ideas, and evaluating
possibilities. To develop these skills, both sides of the brain need to work
together. According to Daniel Pink in A Whole New Mind, "The future belongs to
a very different kind of person with a very different kind of mind - creators
and empathizers, pattern recognizers and meaning makers. These people...will now
reap society's richest rewards and share its greatest joys."
Art
in Action is dedicated to making sure your students are prepared for the future by
giving them the necessary skills - innovation, creativity, and imagination to
ensure they are successful in the emerging Conceptual Age.

2009 Otis Report on Creative Economy
|
"Los Angeles likes to call itself the "creative capital of the world" -- a boast that is certain to raise eyebrows in cities like New York, San Francisco, London or Paris. But could the claim actually be true? A recent study titled the 2009 Otis Report on the Creative Economy says one in every six people in the L.A. region is employed in a creative field. In addition, L.A. organizations in the creative field earned an estimated $121 billion in revenues in 2008. Summit on the Creative Economy Carol Coletta, President of CEOs for Cities, gives the keynote address at Washington DC's Summit on the Creative Economy.

| Book of the Month |
Willow by Denise Brennan Nelson and Rosemarie Brennan
This book
addresses a problem that is all too prevalent in education today: stifling the
natural creative impulse. In art class, neatness, conformity, and imitation are
encouraged, but when Willow brings imagination and creativity to her projects,
even straight-laced Miss Hawthorn is influenced. We all could use a
"Willow" in our lives. To read more |
