| Letter from the Executive Director
Why should we teach our children art? After all, if it's so much fun, it can't be healthy! But it is! In fact, the arts are critical in developing the right brain. Ava, age 9, told me she likes art because she can chose her own colors. Decision making is a high level thinking skill, so when she paints, Ava is practicing critical thinking skills such as intuition, evaluation, and synthesis to design her composition. If Ava has had a good art education program like Art in Action, she will know how color creates mood, unifies a composition, and adds emphasis. Ava will intuitively add yellow to her blue sky to create a warmer day, or place blue next to its complement to add emphasis. As Ava learns to look at art by the masters, she learns to see subtle color variations, to recognize significant contrasts, and to identify the artist's intention. When Ava chooses her own colors, she holistically applies her awareness of depth, harmony, and emotion. According to Nobel laureate, Roger Sperry, the right brain manages complexity, ambiguity and paradox. These are tools needed for tomorrow's leaders as they rescue boat captains, evaluate business trends, or strategize for world peace. As a child learns to imagine, discover, and create, they are developing critical skills for future success.

Why We Need the Arts Now More Than Ever!
Studies of the 1930s have shown how the economic meltdown was accompanied by psychological depression. Going to the movies or listening to the radio could not solve these problems, but they could ease them in the same way that President Franklin D. Roosevelt's intimate fireside chats boosted morale and restored confidence. Read more April 1, 2009, Los Angeles Times
