Pollock SampleArt in Action is proud to sponsor a new contest launched today on SecretBuilders.com, a fun, safe, learning-oriented virtual world for kids. The "Dear President Obama" contest asks children to share a thought with President-elect Obama. Kids send in a drawing, photo, or video with a short text message highlighting anything they wish to bring to the attention of the President-elect and the world. The winning entry wins $500 for the contestant and $500 for their school, AND will be published on President's Day 2009 on The Huffington Post news website.

Holiday Art Tips from Betsy....
cards
Make your own holiday wrapping paper. Buy a large roll of white paper from Ikea. Cut off a piece big enough for wrapping what ever it is and let your children draw pictures, scribble color on, or write messages. Colored pens work best and won't rub off. Or, cut out colorful magazine pictures and glue them on with white craft glue, or make snowflakes out of silver or gold paper and glue them on. Stamp the paper with silver or gold ink or draw squiggles with a gold or silver paint pen for another variation. Tie up with colorful yarn instead of bows for a real home-made look!

Opportunities to Build Creativity Elude Many Students
Many employers value workers with creative skills, yet research suggests most high schools provide the problem-solving or artistic endeavors believed to foster creativity only on an elective basis. "The findings ... present an opportunity for school systems and business leaders to further engage in a dialogue about how best to foster creativity among students, not only to produce a competitive workforce, but also to help all students succeed in life," said Paul Houston, Director of the American Association of School Administrators.
