| Art in Action Teams up with Libraries to Make Sudanese Masks
The 2008 selection for the One Book, One Community program is What is the What by Dave Eggers. This is a fictional story about Valentino Achak Deng, a young boy who is a refugee of the Sudanese civil war. Fleeing from his village in the mid-1980s, Deng becomes one of the so-called Lost Boys. What Is the What is the story of survival of the human spirit and through the events during the month our community will learn more about the Sudan crisis. Magical masks have captured the hearts of children everywhere. Join Art in Action in making a Sudanese-style mask during the month of October. For more information visit the PLS website

| How can YOU help us bring Art in Action to more children in the Bay Area?
Many of our docents have said that they would be happy to mention Art in Action to their friends with children in other schools in the Bay Area. We are keen to help your friends get more information about our program for their school, and even arrange for a meeting with the school principal or PTA. Please contact Torben Gronning or call 650-566-8339 ext. 204 for details. Thank you! |
| Online Teacher Resources
Art in Action is developing exciting new teacher resources for online training. We have been working for two years to create a series of Flash animated and video recorded modules to help teachers and docents prepare for lessons. We are looking for a few schools to guide us as we continue to develop this project. Volunteers are welcome to take part in this project. We are looking for Flash designers, recording artists, and evaluators. If you are interested, please contact Judy Sleeth.

Volunteer of the Month
Kudos to Andrea Burfield, site coordinator at Sandpiper School in Redwood Shores, for guiding the architects of the new Redwood Shores Library to design a display area for Art in Action students to exhibit their artwork. This proves one person can make a difference in a child's life. Check out the fabulous display of kindergarten art in the children's reading area this month!
