| Art Meets Science at Genentech
|
In August, Genentech invited Art in Action to lead a team-building workshop in which 20 scientists created art inspired by Jackson Pollock, Wassily Kandinsky and Louise Nevelson. Betsy and Mara challenged the adults to think "outside the lab" as they splattered paint on their lab coats, mixed acrylic for their canvas, and hot-glued wooden blocks for their 3-D sculpture. Thank you Ma and Tom Patapoff for facilitating a FUN and creative event!

| Online Teacher Resources
|
Art in Action is developing exciting new teacher resources for online training. We have been working for two years to create a series of Flash animated and video recorded modules to help teachers and docents prepare for lessons. These new resources bring discussion notes to life by explaining how artists use color, line, space, and other techniques to tell their stories. Animated project directions give clear visual explanations of each step in the creative process. This is a huge project with state of the art educational techniques and cutting edge technology. We are looking for a few schools to guide us as we continue to develop this project. Volunteers are welcome to take part in this project. We are looking for Flash designers, recording artists, and evaluators. If you are interested, please contact Judy Sleeth.

Thanks to Robbie Parmer who has spent over two years editing the revised Art in Action Curriculum Handbooks. Robbie, a professional editor, has clarified directions, improved sentence structure, and corrected spelling and punctuation. It has been a pleasure working with Robbie, and we will all enjoy the enhanced books for years to come.

Gallery Highlights Legion of Honor

At the time Impressionism was born, female artists were starting to come to the forefront of the art world. Women Impressionists breaks new ground by looking at the work and contributions of four female Impressionists, shown together for the first time in the United States. Many of the works deal with images of women -- women at home, women with family, and women at leisure -- in addition to other themes typical of Impressionsim.

Job Opportunities
|
|
Volunteer Art TeachersArt in Action is seeking adult volunteers to teach Art in Action at St. Elizabeth Seton school in Palo Alto from October - April, 2x/month for 3 hours. This is a rewarding experience bringing art to children who would otherwise not receive an art program. Days and times are negotiable. Contact Betsy to learn more.
On-Site TrainersIf you can teach Art in Action projects to children, you can teach adults about our program too! Trainers instruct docents how to effectively teach lessons at each program level by practicing discussions techniques, showing how to teach the sketching lesson, and demonstrating techniques for using different media. Trainers specialize in one or two program levels and receive private training from the Art in Action program director. Trainers are most active in September and October, with other training opportunities throughout the year. Each session runs approximately 4 hours and is conducted at schools usually in the afternoon.
