Hi there!

You know that No.1 bestselling book called The Secret? Ever wondered why it wasn't just called "Wishful Thinking"? No, me neither.

But isn't that just what it is? Isn't it a super-de-duper version of the old, sad lament "when I win the Lottery I will..."?

Sorry, I am just being glib but it's a salient point; there's a fine line between cosmic ordering and this

You know me; I'm not adverse to a bit of pixie dust. In fact magical thinking delivered me some of my greatest successes in life. It dragged me out of lonely penury into success and relative fame.
Want to know more? Here's a my quick rags to Rich Tea story of how having an intention changed my life.

Years ago I was living in a city 120 miles from where I was born and raised. I had no friends, job, phone, money, cat or clue what to do. "I will be Queen of this City one day" I sighed with hope and a hole in my shoe, a wish uttered in despair from my home which had been burgled 3 times (all of my stuff taken).

(I'll hand out the Kleenex later - bear with...).

The only two things I could do well was cook and draw so in my hours of loneliness and boredom I slowly devised a children's television series where, in my mind's eye, I would cook for celebs and animated puppets would assist me.

Having nothing to lose (including face) I sent it out to 5 major TV companies and, what do you know, one said "yes".

Lo, my programme became a network show. One week it topped Blue Peter for viewers. How cool is that? I was about as good a presenter as Simon Cowell is a self-less humanitarian but hey, I did it.

After another long period of inactivity and long story short I became a journalist and, though entirely self-taught, I went on to interview the great and the good from Paloma Picasso and Terence Stamp to Stephen Fry and Lord Patrick Lichfield.

As the fashion editor and restaurant critic I pretty soon got to know everyone of note, style and taste in the area. One day I had my Damascene moment; I caught myself where I was, what I was doing and drew a deep gasp - I was Queen of the City!

I share this little urban fable not to blow my trumpet (I'll leave that to Satchmo) but to encourage you into some magical thinking of your own. Having a compelling goal, a vision and even the foggiest action plan is the first step to creating a life path that actually leads to a life well lived.

You don't know what your life will have in store for you and neither do I but I do know you have more chance of getting what you want if you know what you want.

The stepping stone is often right in front of you even if you can't see the end of the path.
Here are some tips to encourage you into some magical thinking.
  • Going with the flow feels like an easy option but leads to "how did I drift into this?"- so have a clear end goal
  • Start acting "as if" you already had your end goal now - act as if you have an abundance of love, wealth, recognition etc.
  • We are all connected in some way - actively appreciate and show compassion where you can for all who cross your path
  • To seek out things that make you wide-eyed with wonderment
  • Regularly do things that stretch and scare you - you'll be amazed at what you can do
  • Always imagine when you do put yourself "out there" - you will always be "held"
  • Dare to "get" that failure/disappointment or rejection - it is a just a learning curve dressed in Primark
  • Look for the gifts in any situation - they are there (no matter how hidden)
  • When you find a purpose or reason for your suffering - it makes sense and feels easier
  • Though you must keep your focus on the future never forget - there is no more powerful and poignant place than right now. You will never have this time again.
