In Which We Get Richer and Thinner
No 76

Bless you for opening this 3 minute read.  Welcome to my 9th year of Wit and Wisdom newsletters.  My aim is to make personal development fun and real, to  raise a smile as you raise your potential and to give you that inner glow that comes with knowing you are in the at the right place, at the right time and in the coolest shoes.

"Thank for your January newsletter and for giving me permission to take a gentler approach to getting my goals this year" - Jan, Stratford.

Hi there!

If you don't wish to lose weight or get fiscally fitter you can skip this section and scoot down to the newsy bits at the bottom of the newsletter. Ahh, you're still with me. In fact it looks like I've got a full house. Please put down the popcorn and listen up.

Am I talking your language when I say you're sick of thinking David Cameron is talking to you when he mentions the "squeezed middle" as you poke your muffin-waistline?

Or perhaps you are tired of throwing your money at your debts like pebbles down an endless well?

According to research your health and your wealth are inextricably linked and experts say we often lose weight when we get our finances under control. Debt, research reveals, makes you twice as likely to be over-weight or obese.

If that has made you sit up and think then here are some coaching tips on how to accomplish both of your goals.
  • Experts say you should start with one thing first. Don't try to do both simultaneously. One will eventually impact the other.
  • "Get" there is freedom in control. Once you have paid off a few hundred pounds or lost a bit of weight see how good you feel. You have learned impulse control and that feels much better than mindless binge-dom. This has given your willpower a workout.
  • Deter feelings of deprivation. You may actually find you gain weight when you tackle your debt. This is because we may replace one impulse with another.
  • Create new habits. You can't substitute eating for shopping so develop some new distractions. Go for a run or walk with a friend, re-organise your home, de-clutter, - come up with ideas that quell your desire to shop or eat.
  • Practice mindfulness. If you feel the urge to panic-eat an industrial-sized bag of crisps ask yourself what emotions you may be trying to push down. When you see something you want decide to walk away and see if you still want it the same time next week. If you do then budget for it. Chances are you decide you neither need nor want it.
  • Dig and delve. This is the toughest bit of the process - finding out what is behind the over-spending and over-eating. Loneliness, anxiety, low self esteem - there are a lot of reasons why we seek to fill a void in our lives with behavior that can become toxic. A coach can seriously help you with this.
  • Remember you can never get enough of what you don't really need.
