You have probably heard the quote that says that most people crave immortality yet haven't a clue what to do on a rainy Sunday? Funny isn't it that often our most powerful desires don't stand up to heavy questioning?
Why would we want to live forever when a trip to Primark on a Saturday is a form of living hell? Imagine how much Botox you'd need to keep back the ravages of 240 years or what sort of age would you stop the clock at? Just think how you would look.
I've just got 2 words to say in warning about that - Cliff Richard.
Seriously though when we take time out to think what lurks behind our wildest desires we find some salient solutions.
The fast car, running the marathon, the big house, the top job, the dream partner - just some of the things we believe will deliver a degree of happiness and sense of completion.
All things that we yearn for outside of ourselves - external landmarks if you will.
Just imagine winding the clock forward and having those things or achieved them. What would that be like? People may be impressed by us, we could at last "prove" something to ourselves or worse (and this is incredibly common) to some imagined jury of do-downers and critics we sense see us as less than we are. That'll show 'em, we think.
But what if you didn't have to prove anything to anyone now or ever?
Some clients reveal that they would feel lighter, freer and happier if they could only reach their goals.
Some clients who achieve their goals feel strangely numb. It's as though it didn't feel as they expected it would, or only fleetingly, as they search for the next thing to aim for. Pushing that bar even higher, reaching it but never feeling the satisfaction they imagined. It goes on.
How many times have you heard that it's not the destination but the journey that matters? As a coach I really urge my clients to embrace the here and now, whilst keeping their eye on the horizon.
That means being really aware of all the blessings, good things, daily magic and joy in life that can be found in small things. A nice cappuccino and cake with a pal, a child's drawing dedicated to you, hearing some great feedback, relishing a morning run in the rain or reading a great book in the bath.
Be the god or goddess of small things. Without being too love beads and kaftan but when we notice the good in the here and now every day feels richer. It's like you've already reached your goal.
