Giving IT a Front-end Alignment
Greetings!
Clint Eastwood's new movie, "Gran Torino", brought back memories of my first car, also a '72 classic...a '72 Buick Apollo. (Go ahead, you can laugh.) What's a Buick Apollo? Think Chevy Nova but without the cool name, cool reputation, or cool...anything. Among its problems, it pulled hard to the right. I had to steer into a constant left turn just to keep the car headed straight. My friend Mike ridiculed me. He told me I seriously needed a front-end alignment. I had no idea what he meant, so I just kept turning left...and kept accepting the poor performance.
Just like my '72 Buick, most IT organizations are also woefully mis-aligned...they pull one way, while rest of the business is headed in a different direction. I hear the complaints often. IT isn't responsive. They're unable to deliver projects on time and within budget. They care more about technology than the business. They are difficult to communicate with. IT professionals do care, but these are real issues and they make it hard for IT to get and stay in sync with the business. Business-IT alignment resolves these issues.
(See the bottom article for a some alignment strategies.)
So whether your IT organization resembles my '72 Buick Apollo, or it's more like Clint Eastwood's sleek '72 Gran Torino, alignment can significantly improve performance...for IT and for the business.
Here's to 2009...the year of building more efficient, effective, high-performance businesses!!

- IT Alignment Strategies -
How can IT get in sync with the business? It requires continually improving IT's efficiency and effectiveness. Here are some insights and strategies for making it happen through Tactical, Strategic and Innovative alignment: Tactical Alignment When IT is tactically aligned with the business, they are able to consistently and efficiently meet the daily operational needs of the business. Strategies 1) Continually improve IT's efficiency, freeing up resources and dollars that can be shifted to higher-value strategic efforts.
2) Ensure IT transparency through an effective IT Steering Committee.
3) Get IT out of low-value/costly fire-fighting mode - it's a black hole for productivity and value. Strategic Alignment Strategically aligned IT organizations consistently help the business achieve its strategic goals and objectives. Strategies 1) Keep IT and business strategies in sync through regular review and adjustment of strategic plans (at least quarterly).
2) Leverage business/IT advocates. These are IT resources with a strategic business mindset and strong communication abilities who act as IT's advocates into the business, and business advocates into IT.
3) Improve strategic project throughput. Consistently deliver projects on time and within budget...and get more done in less time. It is possible! Leverage an effective Project Management Office (PMO) or an Agile/Scrum approach to product/solution delivery. Innovative Alignment Innovative Alignment happens when the organization regularly uncovers opportunities to leverage systems or technology for business advantage. Strategies 1) Have a mechanism to ensure that business and IT resources are engaged in ongoing, two-way communication, education and collaboration.
2) Value, encourage and reward innovative thinking and collaboration. Communicate even small wins. Openly discuss and learn from every success, and every failure.
Business-IT alignment will improve IT's efficiency, effectiveness and value to the business.
