In The Loop |
Changes to the Youth Transition Programs -
How do they effect your program?
As you would be aware by now the Federal Government is making changes to the way young people are supported in the youth transitions space. Tenders are now being received for organisations interested in entering this arena and you can find more details by following this link to the DEEWR website.
One of the biggest impacts of these changes will be the possible closure of up to 53 programs when both the Mentor Market Place and Mentors for Our Students funding come to an end on the 31st of December 2009. While some programs have told us that their organisations will be able to absorb the operations of their programs, majority are in limbo as to whether they will continue or close down.
The Youth Mentoring Network would like to work with interested programs affected by these closures to see how we may be able to be of assistance. Suggestion received to date include helping to support mentors through this process and possibly seeing how volunteers can be referred on to other programs so that we do not loose a pool of qualified mentors.

Research on Indigenous Programs |
Catherine Koerner, Simone Tur and Christopher Wilson have written a chapter in the upcoming book entitled The Racial Politics of Bodies, Nations & Knowledges (edited by Barbara Baird and Damien Riggs). Their contribution looks at the suggestion that the conventional literature on mentoring does not have a racial consciousness. They argue that mentoring can deal with racialised experiences and improve educational engagement of Indigenous students. The chapter looks at the effect of the Inspire Mentor Program, which trains non-Indigenous mentors to work with senior school students to increase their retention rates in a low-socio economic area near Flinders University in South Australia. Volunteer Grants 2009
Volunteer Grants 2009 provides funding from the Federal Government to eligible non-profit organisations to support their volunteers and encourage volunteering by:
- purchasing practical and tangible small equipment items to help volunteers, and/or
- contributing towards the reimbursement of volunteers' fuel costs incurred when carrying out their volunteering work, including those who use their cars to transport others to activities, deliver food and assist people in need.
Organisations can apply for grant funding from a minimum of $1,000 up to a maximum of $5,000.

Mentoring Programs |

Spotlight on Mentoring Programs Listed on the Youth Mentoring National Database!

This month, we would like to highlight the great programs below! The Youth Mentoring Network supports a diverse variety of mentoring programs. In order to better connect programs we have decided to highlight different groups of programs this month based on either the young people they support or the type of program structure they use.
The following programs have been selected because of the assistance they provide to youth who are refugees or who have recently immigrated to Australia.
Click on their names above to learn more about these programs.
If you know of a program in this field that is not listed above please feel free to pass on this newsletter to them and encourage them to register their program.
Remember, there is no cost involved in the program registration. By registering your program details on our online database, you will also be adding your voice to the growing number of youth mentoring programs demanding that funding bodies take a more serious look at mentoring. If we all work together, we can achieve a more knowledgeable mentoring environment and provide better support for your program, which will lead to more support and guidance for the youth of Australia.
