New Research Confirms the Importance
of Youth Mentoring

A new research document has been released entitled "A Development Perspective on College & Workplace Readiness" by Laura Lippman, Astrid Atienza, Andrew Rivers and Julie Keith.

This American report provides a developmental perspective on what competencies young people need to be ready for college, the workplace, and the transition to adulthood.

The report looks at  the importance of mentoring in order to assist young people from disadvantaged and at-risk backgrounds from achieving the competencies required for the transition to adulthood.

Youth Transitions

We want you
Last month Minister Kate Ellis (Minister for Early Childhood Education, Childcare and Youth; Minster for Sport) announced changes to the youth transitions programs funded by the Federal Government. The Government's $618 million investment will be restructured to ensure that young Australians at risk of falling through the cracks get the support they need to get into training and work.

The changes will take effect from 1 January 2010 and will see the existing Australian Government youth, transitions and career programs be restructured into two new initiatives: Community and Education Engagement Partnerships programs and Youth Connections programs.

Current programs that will be consolidated into the Community and Education Engagement Partnerships programs include: Local Community Partnerships, Regional Industry Career Advisors and National Industry Career Specialists. Youth Pathways, YouthLinx, Connections and Mentor Marketplace will be consolidated into the Youth Connections programs.

For more information about these changes visit the DEEWR website.

Boys Jumping
This month, we would like to highlight the great programs below! The Youth Mentoring Network supports a dirvese variety of mentoring programs. In order to better connect programs we have decied to highlite different groups of programs each month based on either the young people they support or the type of program structure they use.

The following programs have been selected because of the assistance they provide to youth within the disability sector.

Click on their names above to learn more about these programs.

If you know of a program in this field that is not listed above please feel free to pass on this newsletter to them and encourage them to register their program.

We would also like to welcome the Mentoring For Our Students - Ipswich mentoring program to our database. Click on the program's name to learn more about it.

Remember, there is no cost involved in the program registration. By registering your program details on our online database, you will also be adding your voice to the growing number of youth mentoring programs demanding that funding bodies take a more serious look at mentoring. If we all work together, we can achieve a more knowledgeable mentoring environment and provide better support for your program, which will lead to more support and guidance for the youth of Australia.
