Building critical social infrastructure: The business case for expanding support for school based mentoring in Australia.
The Youth Mentoring Network has released its latest report, a Business Case for Expanding School Based Mentoring in Australia. The report highlights the benefits of school based mentoring as a way of assisting young people with their personal development, guiding them through critical transition phases and engaging them in further education, skill development opportunities and the workforce. The business case recommends a 10 Point Plan for developing a national school based mentoring strategy. Some of the key points include:
- 75,000 young people provided with a mentor over 5 years
- At the peak, 25,000 young people will be matched with a mentor. This is equal to 50% of early school leavers for a single year.
- The cost of an ESL to the taxpayer over their lifetime is approximately $74,000 (based on 1999 figures).
- The cost to mentor a young person for a year is approx. $1,500 p.a.
- The YMN is asking governments and the private sector to contribute $115.3 million over 5 years to reach this target.
To put the request into perspective, reducing the rate of ESLs by 90% will provide an economic boost of nearly $10 billion by 2040.
