A Message from the Executive Officer

Birthday CakeThe Youth Mentoring Network turned 2 this week. This doesn't just mean that a website has been in operation for 24 months, it means much more than that.

For the past 2 years the youth mentoring community has been actively working together to build the quality of youth mentoring in this country by sharing resources, participating in forums, attending workshops and creating national benchmarks.

When I first started in this role, best practice and benchmarks were not something people were talking about. It was considered a nice idea but people were too busy running the program to even consider implementing standards.

Two years on and the sector has changed and for the better. A fantastic example of this change was seen when we launched the National Benchmarks last year and over 500 people provided feedback to the final document. This is proof that the sector is maturing and quality standards, best practice, evaluation and research are now seen as crucial elements of a successful program and no longer seen as a luxury only spoken by those in larger organisations.

The sector though is about to go through another change. Program funding is starting to come to an end, there is a new Federal Government and youth issues are being given a more prominent focus in the media. We as a Network of organisations need to see how we can turn these events into opportunities and ensure mentoring moves forward and is seen as an essential part of youth development along side education, skill development and career.

The Youth Mentoring Network will be working on this over the next 18 months and to ensure you are on top of all the developments we have added a new section to our monthly newsletter called In the Loop. I suggest that you take a few moments once a month to read through this information.  There will be announcements of how programs and individuals can become more actively involved and many opportunities for people to provide feedback and suggestions.

Thank you to everyone who has continued to support the YMN over the past two years. The next 18 months will prove to be a very exciting time for our sector and I look forward to working with you as we move forward into our next phase.

What's NEW on the site?

New Youth Mentoring Network Website!

The Youth Mentoring Network has just turned 2 and to celebrate we are launching a new look website. The new website structure has been created to better align the information with the National Youth Mentoring Benchmarks making it easier to find specific information.

Besides the new Organisational Governance and Management page, new tools and resources have been added throughout the website including a new page for past forums, more tools to assist with the closure of matches and more information on professional development opportunities for practitioners and mentors. The website will continue to develop and grow over the coming months.

In the Loop

Welcome to the new section of the YMN E-Newsletter. Each month we will provide you with an update on the work the Youth Mentoring Network is completing behind the scenes to ensure mentoring remains a high priority in the Australian youth sector. We will be calling for your help at times. It is here where you will be able to remain in the loop!

National Youth Mentoring Partnership

The Youth Mentoring Network (YMN) is funded by the National Youth Mentoring Partnership which consists of 4 non profit organisations (The Smith Family, Dusseldorp Skills Forum, Job Futures and Big Brothers Big Sisters Australia) and the Australian Federal Government. The partnership was officially formed in 2004 and in 2005 started the YMN. The partners agreed to fund the project for an initial 12 months and pending an independent evaluation would fund the project for a further 2 years. This original funding agreement is due to come to an end on the 30th September 2008.

In the mean time, the YMN staff have been investigating ways in which the Network can continue to operate once the original funding ceases. The staff are working on what is being called the YMN transition process. Part of the process has been to consult with stakeholders and obtain their ideas and input into how they see the Network operating in the future. The YMN will continue to keep all members informed of the process.

Stakeholders Consultation Day

On the 27th of February the YMN held its first stakeholder consultation day in Sydney. 25 people from the mentoring sector including, program coordinators, mangers, academics, researchers, and government funding agencies were invited to attend the day.

The aim was to look at a number of potential strategic directions the YMN could take and examine which of the strategies best suited the needs of the Network. A report from this meeting is being created and will be available on the YMN website in the coming months. In the coming months the YMN will be holding focus groups with members and providing online mechanisms to ensure as many people as possible have a say over the future directions of the Network.

If you or your organisation would like to take a more active role in this process please contact Kathleen Vella directly to discuss how this can be possible.

Perth to Paradise

15 year old to ride 4,500km

to raise money for youth mentoring

bike at sunsetIn 2007 15 year old Jack Sinclair won $250 for being the winner of a

Youth Citizen of the Year Award on the Gold Coast. He donated the money to his dad who was doing a charity bike ride from Sydney to Surfers to help homeless youth.

This year Jack decided to do something more and that's why, starting September 11, he's cycling across Australia from Perth to Surfers Paradise with his dad - 4,500 kms in 30 days - to raise money for the charity Big Brothers Big Sisters of Australia.

You would agree this is an amazing challenge for anyone but to be 15 and considering the challenge is inspiring in its self. Jack has created a website and you can track their progress as they go. They have already uploaded their intended path and on some days will need to cover over 200km to stay on time.
