I had the unique opportunity to put The Tobacconist Handbook in the hands of the legislator who promoted the smoking ban [in one of the states] where I have a retail store/tobacconist. When he looked at the cover he had an 'a-ha' moment; he was clearly taken back by the fact that a professional book existed for people who 'sell tobacco'. That opened the door for me to discuss how 'we are serious professionals with expertise in handmade products' and how 'we are no different that chefs, sommeliers, or other professionals and experts who serve their customers'. It opened the door to a CONVERSATION! The Tobacconist Handbook provided physical proof of our PROFESSION. That's a START! And this is just the beginning. Every retail tobacconist should have a copy of The Tobacconist Handbook; to start conversations and establish their professionalism.
