In this spider-eat-dragonfly world, a well-set trap can ensnare even the most skillful hunter. As a winged adult, the dragonfly demonstrates its predatory prowess by using the basket formed by its legs to catch insects in midair--enough in just 30 minutes to equal its own body weight. Its relatively large wing size means it can fly faster than and outmaneuver almost any potential prey. A dragonfly's diet includes mosquitoes, flies, termites, gnats and other small insects, as well as butterflies, moths, bees and even an occasional spider. It is probably fortunate for small mammals that the dragonfly's 300-million-year-old fossil ancestors--with a wing spans of up to 2.5 feet--became extinct. Mosquito-free nights are a good reason to protect dragonflies and other natural pest controllers by helping us KEEP IT WILD!
