The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom the emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause and stand wrapped in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed.
~Albert Einstein, theoretical physicist, philosopher and author, 1879-1955

Organic shapes like spirals have long fascinated scientists, mathematicians and artists. Manifested repeatedly in galaxies, shells, plants and many other natural forms, spirals share common mathematical characteristics. Mathematics defines a spiral as a two-dimensional curve with the radius increasing or decreasing as it winds around a central axis. Spirals in nature, like wild cucumber vines, are never literally two-dimensional, but always have some thickness. On the other side of the spectrum are helixes: three dimensional forms that maintain a constant radius around an axis. Like DNA, helixes, spirals and other organic shapes provide clues to understanding the nature of life itself. Preserving nature's familiar patterns in all their awe-inspiring variety is one more reason to KEEP IT WILD. |
