HOPE is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul, And sings the tune without the words, And never stops at all...
~Emily Dickinson, American poet, 1830-1886 |
If spring had a theme song, warbling, chirping and cooing would probably play big roles in the composition. The return of migrating birds and their spring serenades is one way we mark the end of winter. Thanks to one courageous scientist, we now know that birdsong is also one signal of a healthy environment. The 1962 publication of biologist Rachel Carson's book, Silent Spring, about the devastating effects of pesticides on birds and other animals, plants, soil and water touched off a public outcry that is widely credited with helping launch the environmental movement. Carson's book led to a nationwide ban on DDT and other pesticides and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. Minimizing the use of chemicals in your garden and at home is a good way to celebrate Earth Day, honor Rachel Carson's memory and KEEP IT WILD. |
