In Southern California, summer's last gasp is a devilish wind. Following our dry season, the fall Santa Ana winds create the ideal conditions for wildfires--the reason our most destructive blazes often occur in late September and October. When the high desert region between the Sierra Nevada and the Rocky Mountains begins to cool, a build up of air pressure propels winds down toward the Los Angeles Basin. Compression causes the temperature of the winds to rise and humidity to fall. These hot, dry winds gather speed as they push through passes and canyons, desiccating the vegetation in their path. Although Santa Ana winds usually blow between September and March, their fire-fanning potency peaks in autumn. Staying alert to danger in the wilderness will help us KEEP IT WILD.
