Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson, American writer, 1803-1882

Oak trees are testaments to nature's patience. Taking 80 years to grow no more than two feet in diameter, oaks do not even produce acorns for the first 20 years. Although they live 200 to 400 years, some have been known to survive 800 years or more. It's no surprise that they have come to symbolize strength and endurance to many people throughout history. Thriving in coastal California's mild and often misty climate, Quercus agrifolia (sharp-leaved oak) grows along streams and in woodlands and chaparral throughout our wilderness. Get too close and this oak's prickly leaves will remind you to KEEP IT WILD.
