Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby.

Langston Hughes, American writer, 1902-1967

After five dry years, even "average" rainfall seems unusual. With this rainy season's precipitation totals running above normal, new growth has transformed the hills from dusty brown to bright green, hinting at another colorful spring wildflower season ahead. Although wilderness areas are closed for 48 hours after significant rainfall, you can take advantage of breaks in the weather to hike down Laurel Canyon to see water flowing in Laurel Falls. The shell fossils along the creek at the bottom of the trail give evidence of a time when our dry landscape was undersea. Tread lightly in the wilderness and help us KEEP IT WILD.
