What did the tree learn from the earth to be able to talk with the sky?

As winter approaches in southern California, sycamores and other broadleaf trees finally get the signals that reach their northern neighbors much earlier in the fall. In response to shorter days and reduced sunlight, trees begin shutting down the food factories in their leaves. As photosynthesis stops, leaves' green chlorophyll disappears and hidden colors gradually appear. Cool nights turn the glucose in the leaves from yellow and orange to red--the colder the temperatures, the brighter the color. Enjoy nature's own leaf light show this holiday season and remember to KEEP IT WILD. |
Celebrate the year's shortest day with a Winter Solstice Hike on December 21.
