Summer is here and we're ready for it! In addition to offering a wealth of recreational programs and activities for all ages we are providing over 200 seasonal jobs for area residents.
Just a few of our great opportunities coming your way this summer include: a new outdoor adventure program, a new attraction at Discovery Island call the Flowrider, 19 summer day camps for kids, Little League Baseball, and the Presidents Cup Soccer Tournament on June 12.
If you're looking for more passive activities you may want to take a lawn chair out to Oak Grove Lake Park, pick out a good shade tree, and watch the Model Sailboat Club stage a regatta. Or....go up to Pleasant Ridge Park and fish for trout and bream. Actually, the possibilities are endless. Let's all have a memorable and safe summer. See you out there.

That you can go surfing right here in Greenville? Our new attraction at Discovery Island, the Flowrider, offers visitors a simulated surfing experience. If you're a bit unsteady about all of this we'll teach you how. We're offering lessons as well as the opportunity to bring in your friends for a Flowrider party. This new and exciting water feature will open mid June. |
| Wow |
The Second Annual Camp Spearhead Open, held at Thornblade Country Club last month, raised $58,000 towards camperships. Many thanks to all of our friends, golfers, and sponsors who made this event such an incredible success.
In other Camp Spearhead News, SYS Construction is busy at the Camp Spearhead construction site these days. They have poured the footings for the lodge and the airnasium, a multifunctional building that will house everything from an arts and craft area to basketball courts. The goal is to have this new site open for Camp's 2010 season. |
| Break the Ice |
Over 100 ice skaters participated in the recent United States Figure Skating Association's sanctioned "Break the Ice Competition" at the Pavilion. Skaters came from all over South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia demonstrating once again how the Recreation District events help promote tourism in Greenville County. |
| Day Camps |
Just a reminder that we have 19 day camps out there this summer that guarantee 8 weeks of supervised vacation fun for youth ages 6-14. The sites for these programs are countywide. Whether you live in Woodmont, Blue Ridge, Eastside, or in the White Horse Road community we have a camp in your neighborhood. There are still spots available. Visit our website for more information on how your child can attend this summer. |
| HOGS |
Many thanks to the over 300 Hands on Greenville volunteers who worked diligently on May 2, HOG Day, to spruce up our community centers and help get Camp Spearhead ready for summer. The volunteers did everything from repairing buildings to landscaping. A team from Erwin-Penland even painted a mural depicting the history of Sterling in the community center. |
| For All Teachers |
A great opportunity out there for your students is an educational field trip to the Pavilion. The outing combines science, technology, and fun. Our staff takes students on a comprehensive behind the scenes tour and discusses everything from refrigeration to the mechanics of skate sharpening. We've even built a prototype that explains exactly what goes on under that sheet of ice we skate on. After the class everyone gets a free lesson and the opportunity to skate. For more information visit our website. | |
