A Word from the Director

I am thrilled to announce that we have purchased 87 acres at historic Cedar Falls and another 17.5 acres at New Harrison Bridge Road in southern Greenville County to build a beautiful passive park on one of the most spectacular pieces of property on the Reedy River. The purchase was made with mitigation funds from the 1996 Colonial Oil spill.  Acquisition of this money is credited to House Representative Eric Beddingfield and County Councilman Fred Payne who worked tirelessly with the State to release the funds for this project.

The park will be the first Blue Trail in Greenville County. Kayakers and canoers can "put in" at the New Harrison Bridge site for a scenic 4 ½ hour float down the Reedy. The highlight of the trip is your arrival at Cedar Falls where the river widens to over 200 feet, cascading over rocks and creating significant rapids. Many thanks go out to both Fred and Eric for helping to secure this beautiful piece of river property in perpetuity for public enjoyment.

Camp Spearhead
A general contractor, SYS, has been selected to build Camp Spearhead at Pleasant Ridge Park. If everything goes as scheduled we plan to be in the new facility for the summer of 2010. We'll be using the old campsite in Cleveland this coming summer thanks to the hospitality of the folks at the Nature Conservancy.

Coming Up...
Sign up for "Learn to Skate" classes which will begin on March 2.
Tennis Classes for Pee Wees, Juniors, and Adults are offered on a monthly basis. Visit our website for details.

In March we'll be introducing team tennis at the Pavilion for youth ages 8-18.  We're doing this in collaboration with the United States Tennis Association and it's a first for the Recreation District.
Getting in the GREEN
Greenways
The youth in the afterschool program at the Pavilion have discovered a way to eliminate throwing 80 Styrofoam cups into the trash everyday after snack time. Incidentally that averages out to 450 cups per week, 1,800 cups per month and 16,200 cups during an entire school year. The kids had a coin drive and raised money for a dishwasher. This is part of a District wide initiative to recycle and think green.

Did you KNOW...
that we are recruiting seasonal help for our upcoming summer programs? This includes waterfront and hospitality positions at Discovery Island Water Park, counselor positions at our many day camps and Camp Spearhead, and jobs at our swimming facilities. We offer competitive wages and the opportunity for a memorable summer.
Lake Conestee
Through a land swap with the City of Greenville the Lake Conestee Foundation has acquired an additional 15 acres of beautiful forested river bluff along the Reedy adjacent to Municipal Stadium on Mauldin Road and contiguous with Lake Conestee. The City, in turn received 12 acres adjacent to the stadium where the Recreation District in collaboration with the City will build four new baseball fields.
Scouts at the Bridge
Thanks go out to Boy Scout Troop 282 under the project leadership of Thomas Nelson Coleman for their hard work in building a half mile hiking trail at Campbell's Covered Bridge. This was Thomas' Eagle Scout project and part of the Recreation District's vision to create a 20 acre passive/historic park at the site.
Take a Walk
If you live in the triangle bordered by Greer, Mauldin, and Greenville you are probably within a quick drive to MESA. This 16 field soccer complex is the largest in the county and also offers a paved 8/10th mile walking trail. It's flat, wide open, and a great place to push the stroller or go for a power walk.
Activate Greenville
This annual event, co-sponsored by the YMCA, Greenville Hospital System, and Furman University kicked off last month at the Carolina First Center. Our staff was on hand with literature, answers to questions about our various Recreation District programs and many opportunities to stay fit.
Shoot Some Hoops
Ladies, high school age and up, who enjoy passing and shooting, will want to be a part of the first Women's Basketball League offered at Freetown Community Center this winter. Call Jackie at 295-3567 and she'll get you signed up and ready to go.
