Happy New Year!

As we enter the New Year, things are hopping at the Recreation District! We are working on new lights at Corey Burns and David Jackson, putting the finishing touches on renovations at Butler Springs and working to finish a new park at Princeton. Planning is underway for 2008 programs and agency goals are being developed, all in order to provide better service for our park patrons. As always, please be sure to contact us with your ideas about how we can provide better service to you.

MLK Day at Sterling Community Center

Sterling SignMembers of the Greenville County Historical Preservation Commission will gather at Sterling Community Center on January 21, 2008 at 11:15 a.m. to recognize the Sterling neighborhood as a historic district. They will be joined by youth from the Hiram Springle Soccer Camp who are spending the day training on the Sterling athletic field. Both events are in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Summer Camp Registrations

Summer CampRegistration for summer camps is just around the corner. Last year over 1,000 youth participated in our popular summer camp programs.  We have expanded this year offering sites countywide from Slater Marietta down to Fountain Inn.  Program information is posted on the website at www.gcrd.org/summerdaycamps. Watch the newsletter for registration details.

Job at Discovery IslandEvery summer the Recreation District provides hundreds of seasonal jobs ranging from waterfront personnel to camp counselors to sales associates at Discovery Island, and more. Our jobs are fun, rewarding, and pay competitively. Visit www.gcrd.org/jobs for more information.

We Have Roads!

Spearhead RoadIt's been exciting to watch the progress at Camp Spearhead's new site at Pleasant Ridge Park. The entrance, access roads, and sidewalks are already completed. GCRD staff members are meeting with the architects monthly to update drawings and plans.

Naming Opportunities

Annie HailstockCamp Spearhead received many generous contributions toward its Capital Campaign in 2007 but we are still $1.8 million away from reaching our goal. We hope that you make the campaign a priority on your gift giving list this year. There are many naming opportunities--the fishing lake, welcome gate, and bell tower, to name a few. Other ways to contribute involve buying (sponsoring) a bunk bed, bench, or dining table.

Call Mike Teachey at 288-6470 for more information.

Activate Upstate

Activate GreenvilleCommunity partners officially launched this year-round program to promote health and wellness on January 14.
