Fun at the Democratic National Convention in Denver
|
Colorado has seen it's share of big media events.
Many years ago the Pope came to town. Then there were the horrific events at Columbine, the Ramsey case, the Kobe Bryant trial. Last year we had the World Series.
And now, the Democratic National Convention.
As I sit here and type this on a Saturday morning during a brief respite from the building madness, the secret service are busily combing through the fully-transformed Pepsi Center making it secure.
The crowds are arriving in mass. More and more streets are getting blocked off.
And, oh yeah, Barack Obama has just announced his choice of Delaware Senator Joe Biden as his running mate.
Here at Big Pictures we've been busy shooting HD bumpers and scenics for ABC, a liveshot with George Stephanopoulos for World News Tonight, tracking down a "white substance" at John McCain's local headquarters, and shooting a feature on the "Greening of the DNC." This morning, Zumi Hidalgo and soundman Lee Frank were up at 2am to shoot* a Good Morning America liveshot. All this - and the DNC hasn't even started yet!
Tomorrow, the fun really begins. Please wish us luck, and look for our work on ABC News morning and night, as well as a package Scott Tuke is shooting for NFL Films on Rosey Grier as he attends the convention. (Rosey Grier was a defensive tackle for the New York Giants, and a bodyguard for John F. Kennedy).
*With the secret service nearby, it occurs to me that I might want to choose a different verb than "shoot" to describe our activities here!

Now Showing! |
We've managed to do some other work besides prepping for the DNC in the last month! Here are a few of our recent projects & shoots -
"Commodities" - a new Discovery Channel series coming out this fall. Tom and Zumi spent a day with home brew guru Charlie Papazian on an episode about beer. He gave us great footage, great beer, and signed books! We worked with John Kavanaugh and Digital Ranch Productions out of LA.
"Rookie Reporter Showdown" - A promotional piece for Gillette produced by Intersport. Brett Kurland and Intersport worked with Big Pictures team Tom Miller (DP), Kimman Harman (Camera Operator), Laszlo Varga (Gaffer), and Frank Reap (Sound Mixer).
US Senior Open - We got to hang out with Greg Norman, Tom Watson and company as they played the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. We worked with producer Eric Lundsten shooting players interviews, practice and scenics, standups and how-to segments with Andy North for ESPN.
"Apocalypse How" - Worked with Andrea Pilat on this KPI produced program for History Channel on the many ways that mankind might see its demise.
Other shoots this month included a corporate piece for Chevron, a feature on Gary Barnett for the Big 10 Network, and another segment for the Animal Planet show "Untamed and Uncut."
