|
Buy @ Borders!
| Just in time for your back-to-school purchases you can shop and help at-risk children!
Borders is holding a Benefit Day for Dillon on August 6 and 7. A portion of all purchases online or at the Tulsa store locations will be donated to Dillon for our programs when you use Dillon's code (DIIN0867G) or the voucher at checkout.
Be sure to send this information to all your friends. With summer ending everybody has purchases they need to make. Be sure they know how they can make those purchases benefit the children!

Did You Know?

Since January, 47 families have brought their children home.
There are 324 families in process right now.

Camp Highlights...
| Hilda teaching the kids how to make corn tortillas. |
"Can camp last 100 days?"
-Korea Camper
Ask any of the parents at camp and they'll tell you how important
heritage camps are to their children. They'll talk about how great it
is for their kids to not be in the minority; how camps build their
confidence; how they learn they aren't alone in dealing with adoption
and how the sessions at camps help teach them how to respond to
questions or teasing. They'll tell you how much their siblings learn by
being part of the minority for a few days and by discovering the rich
heritages of their adoptive siblings birth country.
This
year we kicked off the camp season in March with Guatemala Weekend. Families took dance
lessons and learned how to prepare a traditional Guatemalan meal with
Hilda, a native Guatemalan who now
teaches dance in Oklahoma City.
Decorating lanterns at Vietnam Weekend. | In June families at Vietnam Weekend were thrilled to see
Thomas, our Vietnam coordinator, and hear about his work in Vietnam.
Thomas enjoyed introducing his daughter to the families and seeing the
children he helped place through Dillon.
Anju, the India orphanage
director, visited India Camp this year. She spoke with families about the orphanage and the home for children with special needs in Kolkata, the needs they
have and her plans for the future.Christina Hess donated a bag of baby clothes for the orphanage. | Over 100 parents came to
our showing of "Wo Ai Ni Mommy" (I Love You, Mommy) at China Camp in July. The film told the
story of eight-year-old Fang Sui Yong, aka Faith Sadowsky,
who was adopted by a Jewish family in Long Island, NY. Chinese-American
film director Stephanie Wang-Breal also attended camp to talk with the parents.
Upper campers had the chance to participate in the dragon dance at China Camp closing ceremonies. | At Korea Camp the Traditional Korean
Musicians group came from South Korea to teach the children traditional
songs and dance. The families loved having the opportunity to learn
about traditional South Korean music and dance and the musicians said
they were very impressed by the families' dedication to camp, even when
it required extensive travel. The group generously donated the
instruments and costumes they brought to Dillon for use at future camps.
The Traditional Korean Musicians group met Dillon staff on Wednesday before Korea Camp. | Families are still signing up for our
African/Caribbean Weekend (scheduled
for Aug. 6 and 7 in Tulsa). If you plan to be there contact our camp
staff now at (918) 749-4600 or lisa@dillonadopt.com!
Heritage
Camps are such an important part of our adoptees' lives, but many of
the children who would love to attend depend on camp scholarships.
Dillon International depends on our supporters to help us continue to
provide scholarships for the kids. If you would like to help with our
camp scholarship fund click on the "donate now" link below.

Staff Travels | As usual the last month was full of staff travels.
Julie Kline went to Dallas for an Ethiopia family dinner. Tegist and Getahun were here from Ethiopia for the event and brought Julie paperwork for several children waiting to be adopted.
Jerry and Deniese made a trip to India where they joined Randy Daniels in Hyderabad to discuss the opportunity of opening a Non-governmental Organization there. While the trip was successful, both Jerry and Deniese's luggage was lost for the entire trip! They spent the evenings washing out their clothing in the bathtub to wear the next day. They were glad when they returned to Delhi where their luggage was waiting for them.

Monthly Feature |
Shawna Sanches and her husband, Louis, live in Tulsa, OK with their children. Shawna is an adult adoptee and adopted her youngest daughter from Korea.
"When I hear the name Dillon it
brings a sense of comfort. Not because I
think without them my life would have been terrible, but because I knew that at Dillon there was a group
of people who did not know me, never saw my face, never talked with my birth
mother and still followed God's plan for their lives. In return they greatly
impacted mine.
Being adopted can
bring so many questions--'what if', 'why' and some about the unknown that might never be answered. Growing up a part of Dillon International was
a stability. It was a place I could
actually visit, could actually see. In
my mind Korea was pictures in books and answers from others, but Dillon was a
place that I had seen and been to myself.
Jerry and Denise Dillon were real people who were there when I came
off the plane for the first time and who witnessed the moment I found my mom
forever. I can never separate them from
my life's journey, either from my past or my present. In 2008, my husband and I returned
home with our daughter, Sophia Grace. We
always knew that adoption would be a part of our lives, even before we were
married. We feel blessed to have gone through Dillon International to bring our daughter home. However, we did not choose Dillon because I was
adopted through them as some might think.
It was the respect and kindness of the staff that we felt in our meeting
with them. We wanted an
agency we knew would look out for the best interest of our future child and us as
waiting parents. With Dillon we felt a sense of
peace. And I felt that it was a double blessing
that Sophia and I would always share this connection. We now stay connected through the
Lunar New Year dinners and Korea Camp where I volunteer and our three older children
attend. Sophia is a future camper in
waiting, but right now she is all about her friends in the nursery. I am glad to know all our children have been
touched in some way by Dillon and I am
excited about future celebrations. I can't wait to see what is in store
for us next."
