SPECIAL BIRTH MOTHERS WORKSHOP
Dillon International's summer parenting workshops are rapidly developing a reputation for exceptional quality with pertinent information for today's adoptive families.  This year's slate of workshops  proves to be no exception.  (See complete listing of summer parenting workshops below.)

I would particularly like to call your attention to an extra-special workshop-titled "From An Ocean of Tears to An Ocean of Love: A Birth Mothers Workshop" which will be held in Tulsa, OK during Dillon International's Korean Heritage Camp on Saturday, July 25, 2009. The workshop will be offered again in Dallas, TX, on Sunday, July 26, 2009, from 3:00-5:00 PM.  Two non-Dillon birth mothers from Eastern Social Welfare Society in Seoul, South Korea, will provide attendees a rare opportunity to hear the unique perspective from an international birth mother. The workshop will also include the voices of an ESWS staff member, an adoptee, and an adoptive family who is part of a semi-open adoption through Dillon's Korea program.

The workshops are open to all adoptive parents (regardless of country program), adoptees, and adoption professionals. Click here to download a flyer that contains registration details about the birth mother workshop.

Please feel free to share this flyer with fellow adoptive families, adoption professionals and/or adoption support networks of which you are aware. We hope you can join us as well!  Two hours CEU credit will also be available for social workers attending either workshop.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT FOSTER CARE?
A national online Harris Poll commissioned by the National Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Association found that most adults know little about foster care or the experience of children in foster care. The poll was conducted in December 2008 and gathered data from 2,281 adults about their impressions of the U.S. foster care system and its impact on children. Results were weighted to reflect the whole U.S. population.

Key findings indicate the following:
83% of adults knew very little about the experience of children in foster care
31% of adults knew someone who was or had been in foster care
87% of adults agreed that improving the foster care system should be a national priority.

I am dedicating this issue to the compassionate people who give their lives to help children in foster care. Foster parents, relatives, caregivers, social workers, agency administrators, and volunteers:  I commend you on your hard work. Together, you care for almost 500,000 children and youth currently living in out-of-home care. You have not ignored the impact of child abuse and neglect in our nation's next generation. You are deeply appreciated!

LaFuci Schutt, C.J. Mallery, J. L. Embich was published in Adoption Quarterly, Vol 11(1) 2008 and is available online at http://www.haworthpress.com.  This research explored student teachers' and counselors' perceptions of the needs of adoptees in schools. The article provided evidence that even a short, basic instruction to educational professionals can sensitize them to better serve adoptees.
