NATIONAL ADOPTION DAY
National Adoption Day is a national endeavor held during November of each year to raise awareness of the numerous children in foster care waiting for permanent, loving families.  More than 300 events are held each year throughout the country to finalize the adoptions of children and to celebrate all families who adopt.  This year, National Adoption Day will be Saturday, November 15, 2008.  Traditionally, National Adoption Day is celebrated the Saturday before Thanksgiving.  However, out of respect for the nation's remembrance of the 45th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the National Adoption Day Coalition elected for this year only to move the celebration of National Adoption Day to the third Saturday in November.

WAYS TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL ADOPTION MONTH
  • Plant a tree in honor of a foster parent
  • Donate a book about adoption to your local library
  • Take a family photo
  • Read several children's books on adoption to an elementary school classroom
  • Send a thank you note to a social worker
  • Send a box of needed supplies to the orphanage your child came from or make a donation to the orphanage
  • For more ideas, visit Adoptive Families' website.

TATYANA MCFADDEN'S STORY
Tatyana's story is well-documented.  She was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, with spina bifida.  After surgery as an infant, Tatyana spent six years of her life in an orphanage.  The orphanage did not have enough money to pay for a wheelchair, so Tatyana walked on her hands while dragging her legs behind her.

Deborah McFadden was a commissioner for disabilities in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  She met Tatyana when she visited Russia; and eventually, Deborah adopted her.  During the Paralympics held in Beijing last month, Tatyana was a multiple medal winner taking three silvers and one bronze.  McFadden set personal records in the 200m, 400m, and 800m en route to earning her medals.
