| What is the Hague? |
| Actually, it is the third largest city in the Netherlands. During international conflicts, the Netherlands has been known to be a neutral nation. Over the years, international conferences led to negotiated conventions termed The Hague Convention. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, led nations to re-evaluate their international adoption practices. Since the early 1990's, organizations have met to develop a multilateral treaty designed for all international adoptions between countries that ratify the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Cooperation in respect of Intercountry Adoption.
The U.S. Department of State selected the Council on Accreditation (COA) to be the primary entity charged with accrediting adoption service providers. The state of Colorado will provide accreditation services to adoption service providers located in Colorado. Dillon International has just completed its site visit with COA. Many other agencies are in the process of being accredited.

Nurturing Adoptions: Creating Resilience After Neglect and Trauma
by Deborah Gray
This book provides interventions that help children affected by neglect and trauma. It is a practical manual for professionals filled with case studies. Deborah Gray shows how a parent-professional team can work together in the best interest of a child. The following chapters in the book were particular favorites of mine: Chapter 8: Common Ground: What Parents, Caseworkers, Teachers, and Therapists Can Do to Help and Chapter 12: Creating Resilience in Children and Their Families
Running the Road to ABC by Denize Lauture
Mama Rocks, Papa Sings by Nancy Van Laan
A comparative review by Janelle Price, Haitian adoptee, age 10
I read Running the Road to ABC and Mama Rocks, Papa Sings. I am comparing these books. They are similar because both books are about Haiti. Another reason why they are alike is the stories are about children. They are different because one is about a party and one is about school children. I liked these books because they are about the land where I was born and I learned how to count in Haitian Creole. |

ByTami Davidson, MSW
A PECK ON THE CHEEK is a Bollywood film about an Indian family who adopts a little girl as a baby. On her ninth birthday, they tell her that she is adopted and through a series of events help her find her birthmother. It's a really powerful story and has won a lot of awards in the Indian film industry.
The Australian movie RABBIT PROOF FENCE is based in South Africa during apartheid. Children, who were of mixed race, were taken away from their aboriginal mothers to be sent to "schools." A group of three girls escapes from their assigned "school" and the rest of the movie is about their story of finding home again. This is also an excellent movie! |

SAFEGUARDING THE RIGHTS AND WELL-BEING OF BIRTHPARENTS IN THE ADOPTION PROCESS by Susan Smith
"This study by the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute represents the most thorough, intensive and sophisticated effort to date to understand contemporary infant adoption, particularly as it relates to the least-understood and most-stigmatized participants in the process." The focus of this study was domestic adoptions in the United States. Read more |
