"Now Wait a Minute!"

Screaming Child 1

Here they come, a mother and her daughter, making their way from the parking lot toward my door. They are on a mission; I can tell. They have come for one thing, and only I can help them get it. As they enter the store, the two march right up to the register. The then mother utters six short words, "She wants to get her ears pierced."

If you have not guessed already, I work at Claire's, and I have pierced many ears. I have been screamed at, pushed away, kicked and vomited on. I have even had a twenty-year-old girl faint on me. But the most difficult customers I have ever had to pierce are the girls from the ages of three to seven. Why is that? Take for example six-year-old Kendal.

She skipped into Claire's with a big smile. Her mother who was lagging a few feet behind her was not as enthused.
Kendal hopped into the chair and reached out to hug the Claire's bear, whose name is incidentally Bartholomew. As I began to pull out all of the equipment, she asked question after question. "What is that?" and "What are you doing now?"  I could tell she was growing a bit nervous, so I chatted with her about Quoteher school and friends. And all was well, until she saw the gun, the Studex gun we use to pierce ears. She sat clutching Bartholomew when I marked her ears with the purple pen. We were seconds away from piercing her ears.  Then, suddenly, Kendal announced, "Now, wait a minute, wait a minute!"

She pushed our arms away. "Just, wait a minute," she said again. As her mother took her hand, we all reassured her that she would be so happy when her ears were done. Kendal finally had her ears pierced, and she left the store as proud and as happy as any six-year-old girl could possibly be.

Thinking back to that day, I realize just how much I resemble Kendal in my relationship with God. There are moments when I say to Him, "Now, just wait minute!" But, just like Kendal, I have got to realize that I can trust Him, no matter how horrible I think the process might be. As we are told in Isaiah 41:10,

Do not fear, for I am with you;
Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, surely I will help you,
Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.
