Who Am I? |
|
Michan MyerEnglish Major As a new session begins, I log on to Blackboard and see the inevitable "Student Introduction Forum." Every eight weeks, I am forced to ask myself: Who am I? Usually, I write the comfortable truth-I'm a passionate Christian woman, a wife, a mother, a student, and a kids' church teacher. It hit me, recently, though-like a proverbial Mac Truck-that I rarely write the other part-that I also dropped out of college and drank away my academic scholarship in karaoke-bar draft beer pitchers, ran-up thousands of dollars in credit card debt, smoked a lot of pot, and got pregnant more than once before I got married. Shocked? Put off? Apparently that's what scares me. It certainly isn't comfortable or convenient to share the ugly part of my past. Because I fear what you might think-I often omit that oh-so-ugly part. I thank God, though, that He doesn't allow us to stay in the comfortable parts of our lives. He speaks plainly through His Word- "They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death." (Rev 12:11). Wow. Conviction strikes when I read that verse. I was discouraged by shock and embarrassment-but not to "shrink from death"-to share my testimony?! Wow again. This is how we overcome-by pressing past our embarrassment and sharing the word of our testimonies. Who am I? I am all those things listed above. The amazing part, though, is the part in between- "That the Lord of all the earth would choose to know my name, choose to feel my hurt-that the bright and morning star would choose to light the way for my ever-wandering heart." God redeemed all the ugly things in my life and blessed me mightily with the life I have today. Just as Casting Crowns so beautifully put it-It's NOT because of who I am or what I've done, but because of who He is and what He's done. Who am I? I am HIS. Who are you? Check out the powerful song that asks this question.
I call you BLESSED! As always, I welcome your questions, comments, and testimonies! Please email me at michmy2@regent.edu

Fellowship in Faith Online Community |
Over the last year, numerous undergraduate students have indicated that they want a way to connect to other undergrads at Regent. No matter where you take classes, you can now fellowship with others anytime online.
Fellowship in Faith is a safe place to share prayer requests or praise reports, and of course, prayer for your peers. You can chat in the general community or join the discussion in the men only or women only groups. Share your favorite God Tube/You Tube videos, song lyrics or links, or testimony, not only in your own words but even in your own voice.
Fellowship in Faith also has links to devotionals, a daily word, and other resources. You can also link to the weekly chapel, which is streamed for online viewers (Wednesdays at 12 noon).
Chances are you are already able to access the community in Blackboard! Check out this page for thorough instructions on how to start enjoying the fellowship you want within the context of your faith 24/7.

Have you ever experienced that moment where you just felt completely inspired? That moment that strikes you unexpectedly and leaves you feeling overwhelmed. Well, I had one such moment the other day. I was watching The Cleaner, A&E's new drama series which depicts the true story of an ex-junkie and the addicts he saves. One episode in particular opened up with the lead character Benjamin Bratt attending a memorial at a prep-school where a gifted student overdosed on heroin. As in every episode, we hear Bratt having a one-sided conversation with God. Standing alone in a darkened corner, he thinks, "How many times have I seen this? More the point, how many times have you? I can't imagine what it's like to have the power to move mountains, and yet you have to stand by and watch this...I wonder if moments like this cause even you to doubt, to question, us...Yes, sometimes I understand it, and sometimes...." As his conversation fades in and out, we hear a song played in the background. The song begins with just a guitar and these simple words, "Slow down, What's on your mind? It's alright. I'm on your side. I hate to see your injury. I wish that you could transfer all your pain to me." As I listened to the words in his prayer and the words in the song, I was instantly reminded of our relationship with God. I have often heard God urging me to "slow down," encouraging me that "It's alright." And I have often questioned if God ever doubts us like we doubt ourselves. The simple truth is that we are His children, and we will never understand His ways. But, it is vital as Christians and as artists that we do not lose sight of Him. He is our truth; He is our inspiration. |
