Welcome Back Re-Cap
Kelly Branch Government Major
To our returning students, welcome back! New students - it is a pleasure to meet you, and I hope you are ready to embark on your fantastic journey here at Regent! For those of you who don't know who I am, my name is Kelly Branch, and I am a junior here at Regent. I am majoring in Government with a Pre-Law emphasis and hope to enter law school upon completion of this program. I have been writing for the student newsletter since its inception last year, and my last few articles highlighted the very interesting presidential election process that is taking place. Similar to a movie sequel, I would like to provide an overview of what we have covered thus far so we can be up-to-speed before we delve deeper into the campaign (in future monthly articles) as the election draws near. The following are highlights from previous articles:
Choosing a presidential candidate requires research of their platforms. Ultimately, this person is taking an oath to represent you (and everyone else in this country) and to act on your behalf.
We need to make sure that when we vote, we aren't voting based on a party, a physical characteristic or trait, or because one candidate seems to be more popular than the other.
The right to vote is not something to take lightly - many valiant souls have laid their life on the line to change policies so we all could have the right to vote. All too often, people reject their freedom to vote as a nuisance - who wants to park all the way down at City Hall in all that traffic? Or as an excuse - well, none of the candidates are any good so I'm just not going to vote. Or out of selfishness - I don't have to vote, I'm too busy. What they aren't thinking about is the ultimate consequences of their choices:
No Voting = No Representation of Christian Values and Beliefs (NRCVB) NRCVB = Lawmakers Elected and Laws Passed that Reject the Ways of Christ (LELPRWC) LELPRWC = Increased Discrimination against Christianity and Freedom of Religion
We live in a world where the Christian worldview is becoming more and more challenged. We, as Christian Leaders, need to step up and be ambassadors for Christ. We do this by supporting a presidential candidate whose views reflect most the values we hold dear as believers and followers of Jesus Christ.
The points above may resonate with you or you may disagree with something I've said so above all things, seek the Lord in your decision. Remember, "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you" (Matthew 7:7, NIV). As we consider our part in the voting process for the presidential election this year, let us take a moment to direct our hearts to The Eternal Leader: Dear Lord, As the presidential election continues in our nation, please help us to fully understand our part in the election process. Help us to choose wisely. Help us find answers to our questions and to make a decision that most aligns with our belief in You. Most of all, Lord, we ask that you please have mercy on this campaign - that Your will be done and that the candidate you wish to see in office will be elected - for your Glory! Lord, in all we do, let us be regents in all we set out to do. We thank you for the privilege of attending this school and for the superior education we are going to receive this year. Please help us do well in our studies, bring new and lasting friendships, and please bless our professors and everyone else who makes attending Regent University a reality. In Jesus' Name, AMEN! If you have a need for prayer or just need to reach out and make a new friend, feel free to email me at kellbra@regent.edu. I would also love for you send me an email and tell me who you think you will vote for and why? (Of course, your input will be confidential). Grace and peace to each of you! Kelly | |
R. U. C.-R U Connected?
By Michan Myer
English Major
A new school year is upon us, and Regent's rapidly growing Undergrad community is gearing up for classes and seeking God fervently. The resounding attitude of students is a desire for connection. An excellent option students interested in connecting with the Regent community should consider is Regent Undergraduate Council (RUC). According to Scott Berry, RUC's president, "Everyone on the council is there to see the student body grow-academically, socially, and spiritually." What a great way to get connected! RUC not only holds social events for on campus students, but they also hold events to facilitate the spiritual growth of students throughout the world (such as "Regent Prays" the first Tuesday of every month).
RUC's focus this year is school pride. The Council desires to see students have pride in their school and what Regent stands for-Christian Leaders to Change the World. Through offering increased interaction between students, faculty, and administration, RUC helps students identify more personally and passionately with Regent and the vision of our school.
Feeling a bit disjointed from the community? Fear not! RUC is here for ALL Undergrads. Online students are a large part of our community at Regent. RUC hopes that online students will take advantage of the Spiritual Life webcasts available, and they also plan to increase the frequency of the online devotionals from RUC's passionate and Christ-centered chaplain, Aaron Aikin.
RUC's passion for building connection and community among Undergrad students is evident in the current president's comment-"Our desire is to get people involved and connected, whatever their gifts may be." RUC wants students to get passionate about Regent, and Mr. Berry requests that students "bring your skills and talents," adding, "We will find a place for you." From musicians to graphic artists, RUC has a place for the unique gifts of its Undergrad students. What a great way to bring our diverse community together! No matter your vocation or location, you can get connected and be proud that you are a Regent student.
RUC wants to connect with you. Mr. Berry invites ALL Undergrad students to get involved. RUC meets every Tuesday at 4:30 pm in Robertson Hall room 301, and you can connect with them online via their website (which is getting a new look soon!): Get connected with RUC!
If you have a question for RUC, you can also connect with them via email at ruc@regent.edu, and if you have questions for me or article ideas please email me at michmy2@regent.edu (I'd LOVE to hear from you). I hope your semester begins with excitement and joy, and I call each one of you BLESSED!
