The conversation will explore the intersection between Zoe Leonard's contemporary artistic practice and the meanings and implications that unfold from the historical materials in the Hispanic Society's collection which Leonard chose for her exhibition, Derrotero.

 

Mitchell Codding has been with The Hispanic Society of America since 1984, first serving as assistant director and subsequently as its director since 1995. Born in Oklahoma, he received a BA in Spanish literature in 1976 from the University of Oklahoma, and earned a PhD in Spanish literature, with a specialization in colonial Latin American literature, in 2000 from the University of Kentucky. Over the past decade, Mr. Codding has written extensively on the history and collections of the Hispanic Society, as well as its founder Archer M. Huntington. He has contributed essays to numerous publications and catalogues, including Spain and the United States: the Origins of American Hispanism (2002), Manet/Vel�zquez: The French Taste for Spanish Painting (2003), and The Arts in Latin America, 1492-1820 (2006). Because of his special interest in the history of cartography, he has written essays and collaborated on exhibitions focusing on the Hispanic Society's world renowned collection of early navigational charts and maps. Most recently he served as curator of the exhibition Cinco siglos de exploraci�n: Fondos cartogr�ficos de la Hispanic Society (2005), presented in La Coru�a, Spain, in conjunction with the  XXII International Cartographic Conference.

 

Bettina Funcke is Parkett's Senior US Editor and has published widely on contemporary art and its production. Her recent book, Pop or Populus: Art between High and Low, is forthcoming in English from Walther K�nig. Latest essays include a text on Wade Guyton (Kunsthalle Zurich, 2008), Gerard Byrne (Afterall, 2008), Robert Whitman for the catalogue Local Report (2007), a text on Jacques Ranci�re for Artforum (2007), and a conversation with Johanna Burton on Guyton\Walker (Bologna, 2008). A member of Continuous Project, she has also lectured on aesthetics, art theory, and art writing at Columbia's MFA program, Bard College, and HfG/ZKM, Karlsruhe, Germany. She also co-edited numerous books with Dia Art Foundation between 1999 and 2007.

Kristin Poor is Curatorial Associate at Dia Art Foundation. In addition to independent curatorial and writing projects, she is currently organizing Tuesdays on the Terrace, Dia's outdoor summer program at the Hispanic Society.
 
Fred Sandback was born in Bronxville, New York, in 1943. After receiving a B.A. in philosophy at Yale, he studied sculpture, with Donald Judd and Robert Morris, at the Yale University School of Art and Architecture. Sandback's first one-person exhibitions were at the Galerie Konrad Fischer, D�sseldorf, and the Galerie Heiner Friedrich, Munich, both in 1968. Since then he has exhibited widely both in the United States and abroad. His work was included in the Whitney Museum of American Art's Annual exhibition of 1968, the Biennale of Sydney, 1976, and the Biennial Exhibition of American Artists at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1979. In 1981 the Dia Art Foundation initiated and maintained a museum of his work, the Fred Sandback Museum in Winchendon, Massachusetts, which was open until 1996. Dia itself presented exhibitions of his works in 1988 and in 1996-97. Sandback died in 2003.
 
Gallery Talks at Dia:Beacon is a series that takes place the last Saturday of every month at 1pm and is free with museum admission. Focused on the work of the artists in Dia's collection, the one-hour presentations are given by curators, art historians, and writers, and take place in museum's galleries.

Nico Israel is an associate professor of English and Comparative Literature at Hunter College and the City University of New York Graduate Center; he also teaches at the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College. He is the author of "Outlandish: Writing between Exile and Diaspora" (Stanford University Press, 2000), a number of essays on modernist aesthetics and geopolitics, and over a dozen catalogue essays on contemporary art. He is also is a frequent contributor to Artforum and Bookforum magazines.
 
Robert Smithson was born in Passaic, New Jersey, in 1938. In 1953, as a high-school student, he won a scholarship to New York's Art Students League, where he studied in the evenings for the next two years, also taking classes at the Brooklyn Museum School in 1956. Smithson's first solo exhibition was in 1959, at the Artist's Gallery, New York. He began to produce what he considered his first mature works of writing and sculpture in 1964. Smithson used black basalt rocks and earth from the site surrounding the Great Salt Lake in Utah, to create the monumental Earthwork Spiral Jetty (1970), a coil 1,500 feet long and fifteen feet wide that stretches out counterclockwise into the translucent red water of the lake. Smithson died in a plane crash in Amarillo, Texas, in 1973, while working on Amarillo Ramp. Major retrospectives of his work have been organized by the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Ithaca, New York (1980), the Institut Valenci� d'Art Modern, Centre Julio Gonz�lez, Valencia (1993), and the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Oslo (1999). In 1999, Dia acquired his Spiral Jetty as a gift of his estate.
