HRSA Announces New Associate Administrator for MCH 

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) recently announced that Dr. Michael Lu will be the new Associate Administrator for MCH (MCH Bureau Director). Dr. Lu currently serves as the Chair of the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Infant Mortality, and has been a leader in the life course approach to health. 

Health Care Innovation Challenge 

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will be awarding up to $1 billion to innovative projects that are testing new approaches to delivering high-quality medical care and saving money. HHS' Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation will be holding a webinar tomorrow, November 17, from 2-3PM EST, to provide more information. MCAH Toolbox: Text Messages for Birth Defects Prevention

The CDC's National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities provides weekly text messages to with reminders to take folic acid, and other health tips to prevent birth defects. Women of childbearing age, including those who are not planning to get pregnant, can sign up for this service to receive mobile health tips.

Maternal-Child Health Nurse Leadership Academy

Applications are now being accepted, through January 16, 2012, for the MCH Nurse Leadership Academy. This academy is designed to develop leadership skills among nurses and nurse midwives who focus on maternal and child health in a variety of health care settings. Learn more.

RFP: Underage Drinking Prevention 

As part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's ongoing efforts to prevent and reduce underage drinking, the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention is soliciting proposals from community-based organizations to participate in a Pilot Site Program. The goal of the campaign is to involve parents in preventing underage drinking by their 9-15 year old children. The letter of intent to apply for this opportunity is due November 30.

Issue Brief on Youth Health Literacy
The National Institute for Health Care Management released an issue brief in October 2011 that makes the case for investing in youth health literacy. The brief states that adolescence is a key developmental period, when individuals may begin to make their own, independent decisions about health care. To learn more about why youth health literacy should be promoted, and strategies for doing so, read the issue brief.

NACCHO's Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Toolkit offers downloadable tools and resources for local health departments. This toolkit aims to connect local health departments with publications, tools, and other resources related to maternal, child, and adolescent health.
