MCAH Sentinel Network
NACCHO is currently undertaking a multi-year project to strengthen LHD Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health (MCAH) programs. As part of this project, NACCHO is creating a Sentinel Network to further increase its understanding of local MCAH. LHD staff members who are working to improve health outcomes for MCAH populations are eligible to participate. The deadline to register online is Tuesday, September 20, 2011. Please email Laura Snebold if you have any questions.
2012 Model Practice Submissions

Is your LHD doing something innovative in the field of maternal, child, and adolescent health? If so, consider submitting an application to NACCHO's Model Practice program. This program has honored innovative LHD programs since 2003. NACCHO will accept model practice applications October 10 through November 11, 2011. If you have any questions concerning the Model Practice program, please e-mail practices@naccho.org and a member of NACCHO membership team will respond. For more information, visit NACCHO's website.

New! NACCHO's Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Webpage

You may have noticed that your biweekly email updates have disappeared. All of the information you used to receive by email is now available online, and much more! NACCHO recently reorganized the Maternal and Child Health, Adolescent Health, and Birth Defects Prevention webpages into one easy-to-navigate Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health webpage. Check us out online for the latest news, resources, events, and funding opportunities available to LHDs. These subject areas will be updated weekly, so be sure to check back frequently to get the latest information. If you have any comments or questions about the new project pages, or if you have you any news or resources to contribute, please email mch@naccho.org

September is National Infant Mortality Awareness Month

During National Infant Mortality Awareness Month, LHDs and their community partners place special emphasis on the health of newborn babies. LHDs and their partners play a critical role in identifying families in need of clinical, social, and environmental support and connecting them to resources. These efforts increase the likelihood that newborn babies will celebrate their first birthday.

APHA's Get Ready Campaign

APHA is encouraging school-based health centers across the country to help raise awareness about preparedness in their communities by holding a Get Ready Day event. School-based health centers can win up to $500 from APHA. Get more information here. The deadline for submission is October 10, 2011.

Healthy Timing and Spacing of Pregnancy Toolkit
Healthy timing and spacing of pregnancy (HTSP) is an approach to family planning that helps women and families delay, space, or limit their pregnancies to achieve the healthiest outcomes for women, newborns, infants, and children. This toolkit provides policymakers, program directors, and service providers with the resources to support informed contraceptive choices, fertility control, and desired family size. The materials provided can be used and adapted at the local level.
School Health Guidelines to Promote Healthy Eating and Physical Activity
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) has released a new resource-the School Health Guidelines to Promote Healthy Eating and Physical Activity-to guide schools in the implementation of policies and practices that promote healthy eating habits and physical activity.
NACCHO's Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Toolkit
NACCHO's Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Toolkit offers downloadable tools and resources for local health departments. This toolkit aims to connect local health departments with publications, tools, and other resources related to maternal, child, and adolescent health.
NACCHO welcomes any tools or resources you would like to share with local health departments. To submit a tool to the Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Toolkit, contact mch@naccho.org.
